Post Strike Cinema 24' - Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine is the return to cinema/box office form for Marvel Studios.

I saw a co-worker in the office today, for her the film was a hit, for me? My review below the trailer. However for now, soon film facts.

Deadpool & Wolverine is 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the sequel to 2016/2018's Deadpool & Deadpool 2.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are back as Deadpool & Wolverine, respectively, alongside Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Aaron Stanford, & Matthew Macfadyen.

The basic plot is, Deadpool is pulled from his quiet life by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), and he partners with a reluctant Wolverine on a journey to save his universe. Yes after Logan (SPOILER ALERT) Wolverine is back alive! And played by the OG, Hugh Jackman!

Deadpool & Wolverine was released in the United States on July 26, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.

Filming began last May, at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional filming in Norfolk and at Bovingdon Film Studios.

However like most films, TV series, production was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, but resumed in November and wrapped in January 2024. Hence my film series in 2024 titled, Post Strike Cinema 24'.

So my thoughts on this pop culture reference, cameo fest? Well there were loads of cameos. Small SPOILER ALERT.

Some of the cameos from former Marvel/X-Men/Superhero films included, Dafne Keen as Laura / X-23, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, legendary, Wesley Snipes as Eric Brooks / Blade, Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau / Gambit, who had been attached to star as the character in an unproduced Gambit film, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm / Human Torch from Fantastic Four,  Blake Lively as the voice of Ladypool, Henry Cavill as a Wolverine Variant dubbed "Cavillrine", plus there are loads more! It is honestly wild!

Overall this wasn't bad, it wasn't amazing. There is almost nothing left to do in these superhero films now. This threw everything and the kitchen sink at getting Marvel back on top. It succeeded, as this film has done incredibly well.

That said, I'll pass it for some amazing pop culture one-liners, however give up Hollywood on using the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC* on your soundtracks to be cute, on trend. Enough already.

2.5 Stars.

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Gangs of London - Season Two

Gangs of London season two, kicks off one year after the death of Sean Wallace, the investors have seized control of all organized crime in London, with Asif Afridi and Ed Dumani serving as stewards over the other gang bosses.

Gangs of London was confirmed for a second series premiering in 2022, however In July 2021, production on the second series had been halted for 10 days following a crew member testing positive for COVID-19.

Filming for the second series began on 31 May 2021 and wrapped in February 2022.

I'm way late to the violent AF second series which premiered in October 2022. A month after it commenced streaming again, the series was renewed for a third season, with production started on October 2023.

There is no news on a streaming date for the third run, however Andrew Koji, Richard Dormer and T'Nia Miller were announced to have joined the cast for the third series.

In the opening episode of this season, The Algerian mafia, led by Basem Soudani, purchase an unauthorized shipment of weapons. Tipped off by Basem's right-hand man Hakim, Asif's enforcer Koba kills the men overseeing the shipment, and tortures Basem's nephew Faz to send a message.

Faz figures out that Hakim was the inside man, and his sister Saba overhears them arguing. Asif and Koba determine that Luan Dushaj made the unauthorised weapons shipment. Against Ed's wishes, Koba carries out an attack on Luan's home.

Luan kills his attackers, but Koba abducts Luan's wife. Shannon Dumani is released from prison for the murder of Detective Chung, but cuts contact with her family except for her son. Elliot Carter has been operating abroad as a hitman for the investors, who leverage his service by holding his father hostage. He is called back to London to kill Alex Dumani, who has been running the legitimate side of the Dumani Corporation but struggling with substance abuse and making unauthorised deals.

Rather than kill Alex, Elliot attempts to give him the thumb drive he received from Sean for blackmail material against the investors. However, Alex gives up hope and commits suicide. Marian Wallace is revealed to be Luan's supplier.

No spoilers for those like me who have taken a while to catch up on the super violent, The Boys level gore, Gangs of London. Either just the second season or both. Now is a good time to catch up with season three no doubt to land, later in 2024. It has been a while between drinks.

Speaking of, I'm back to the cinemas tomorrow. For a popular superhero, teaming up with an X-Man. Yes, I think you can guess what I just saw. Violence levels, similar to that of Stan's exclusive, Gangs of London. So if the Olympics on Stan isn't for you, maybe this is.

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Land of Women (Spanish: Tierra de mujeres) - Season One

Chick flick alert! Well chick TV series alert! What is the new way of describing a chick TV series, that is like a rom-com or a chick flick. There are loads of examples that I have watched recently. Sullivans Crossing, this, Land of Women (Spanish: Tierra de mujeres) and I just started Hallmark's The Way Home.

Land of Women is a comedy/drama/thriller/romance series, inspired by award-winning author Sandra Barneda’s bestselling novel.

Landing on Apple TV+ late June, the six episodes breezed by. Lead by the ultimate Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria, the drama-comedy, follows Longoria, her mother and daughter fleeing to Spain after her husband disappears in the wake of his financial dealings unraveling.

The series is an English/Spanish language series, right in time for me to get stuck into the final Netflix season of the high school romp, Elite.

The series began filming in Barcelona in October 2022, starring (alongside Longoria) Santiago Cabrera, Gloria Muñoz, Victoria Bazua and Amaury Nolasco.

This is the ultimate chick flick, woman meets man, has conflict, that turns to romance. After fleeing the US from her dodgy husband, Longoria falls for the handsome Cabrera.

I read somewhere it was a miniseries, however there is a lot left up in the air at the end of episode six.

I really enjoyed this series, jumping from New York to rural Spain in the vineyards.

Apple TV+ has really been serving up the goods of late. Next is Natalie Portman's the Lady in the Lake, which is meant to be a miniseries.

Coming up this week my verdict on the second season of Gangs of London. I finally finished it! Seeya then!

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Presumed Innocent - Season One

Presumed Innocent as originally set for a miniseries. Then it go popular, so the series was renewed for a second season.

Created by David E. Kelley, based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Scott Turow. The series is the a television adaptation of the book, following the 1990 film adaptation starring Harrison Ford and Brian Dennehy.

Commencing on Apple TV+ on mid-June, with a double episode. The eight episode run follows a prosecutor becomes the prime suspect in the murder of one of his colleagues.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Renate Reinsve, Peter Sarsgaard, O-T Fagbenle, Lily Rabe, Nana Mensah, Noma Dumezweni, Gabby Beans and Sarunas J. Jackson.

With twists and turns, the whodunnit takes some dark turns across its run. I also wonder what a second season will be about? I won't give any spoilers here, however if you want a full episode recap, click here.

Was this Apple TV+'s best work? No, but it was addictive. I also do love me some Jake Gyllenhaal.

I do need to also finish the last ten or so minutes of Land of Women too. Apple TV+ have had a cracker of 2025 thus far! Also great news that Loot was recently renewed for a third season!

Post Strike Cinema 24' - MaXXXine

MaXXXine is the third instalment in West's X film series and a direct sequel to X (2022). Written, directed, produced and edited by Ti West.

MaXXXine stars Mia Goth (reprising her role as Maxine Minx), alongside Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon. What a line up! Halsey and Kevin, bloody Bacon!

In the third film, Maxine sets out for fame and success in 1980s Hollywood while being targeted by a mysterious killer. MaXXXine is a departure from the Pearl origin story, which was the second film in the series. With Pearl, whose fervent aspiration to become a movie star led to her committing violent acts on her family's Texas homestead in 1918. It all links back to Hollywood really. It is a love letter to becoming an actor at whatever the cost. Whatever the violent acts required. And MaXXXine has some very violent acts.

In 1985 Los Angeles, amidst the Night Stalker murders, Maxine Minx successfully auditions for the lead in a new horror film, The Puritan II, despite her past, exclusively in porn.

Maxine is a natural born hustler. She does any jobs possible to remain in Hollywood, auditioning for any roles that come her way. Of course porn to horror is a big step, but Maxine is driven.

I have enjoyed the X film series. While Pearl was a slow burn, this was the opposite. So many stars, murders, violence, this film lead to an explosive conclusion.

It was a very enjoyable night at the cinema, where West has clearly been a lover of Hollywood and the hustle to live/work in the film business.

There is a lot going on in this film, but it works. Maybe a fourth film in the X series will follow? Time will tell.

3.5 Stars.

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - The Boys - Season Four

The fourth season of The Boys, is the darkest by far. It stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti.

With new cast Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Neegan, I mean the Walking Dead's Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Taking place six months after the events of the previous season, Victoria Neuman (Doumit) is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the control of Homelander (Starr), who is consolidating his power. With only months to live, Billy Butcher (Urban) must find a way to work with The Boys, who are fed up with his lies, if they want to save the world before it's too late.

The first three episodes were released on Amazon (with ad's - RAGING) mid June, with the finale streaming late lats week.

Critics have praised this season, for its action sequences, character development, dark humour, emotional depth, storyline, blend of political commentary and surrealism, unique combination of violence, humour and social commentary. The bold approach to tackling complex themes and pushing narrative boundaries is also noted this season. Back in May, ahead of the season commencing, the series was renewed for a fifth season and final season. With Gen V also still around. I feel this is a good thing with an end game in sight.

Following this, wild season. There is only so much more The Boys team can show us right? Homelander is completely out of control, A-Train is missing in action, The Deep is becoming a little out of control and The Boys are highly flawed. That said Butcher's foul mouth always entertains the inner 14 year old boy inside my middle-aged body.

SPOILERS AHEAD if you haven't done the finale yet! You have been warned!

While Butcher recovers, Mallory and Ryan visit him, where the latter is told of Homelander's crimes and that he must kill him.

However, Ryan refuses, accidentally kills Mallory, and leaves, Butcher embraces his dark side of Kessler.

Homelander tasks the remaining Seven with eliminating everyone at Vought who has incriminating evidence against them; Ashley injects herself with V.

While Frenchie develops the virus, The Boys monitor Singer in a bunker where they discover Annie is the shapeshifter and a fight ensues; the real Annie arrives and kills the shapeshifter.

When Homelander reveals that Neuman is a Supe on air live, she calls on Hughie to protect her and Zoe in exchange for help.

When The Boys and Neuman meet, Butcher arrives, kills Neuman with his new superpowers, and steals the virus.

Sage reveals to Homelander that his plan has been a success when Singer is arrested for conspiring with The Boys to kill Neuman.

Speaker of the House Steven Calhoun becomes the new President of the United States, swears allegiance to Homelander and declares martial law, delegating Homelander and his army of superhumans.

The rest of The Boys are ambushed and captured by Vought troops led by Supes, but Annie manages to escape; Butcher leaves with the virus.

Don't leave too early, we get a mid-credits scene, Calhoun shows Homelander where Soldier Boy is being held captive.

So the final season is set up to be a blockbuster season. How will it end? How will survive? This season had such a large death count. I can only imagine how crazy they will go in their final run!

Big Apple TV+ finale week. We will see the verdict on Presumed Innocent along with the sweet Land of Women concluding. See you then!

Post Strike Cinema 24' - Longlegs

Longlegs is a terrifying new horror thriller film written and directed by Osgood Perkins. It also feels a lot more original than a number of films in the horror genre from recent years.

Starring Maika Monroe and a CREEPY AF Nicolas Cage, who also produced the film through his Saturn Films production company.

Also starring a number of familiar faces alongside Monroe and Cage, Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt, Michelle Choi-Lee, Dakota Daulby and Kiernan Shipka. Yes that's right, the latest Sabrina, also stars!

Longlegs follows an FBI agent tasked with tracking down an occultist serial killer responsible for murdering multiple families across America, without having been physically present in the crimes. The start is creepy AF. You are waiting for something to happen when Cage AKA Longlegs meets a young, Lee Harker.

It is no wonder, the film has received positive reviews from critics. It feels slightly new. It is dark AF. Cage is everywhere right now, even on Stan!

Now this film will not be for everyone. However for me, I was gripped for the entire run time.

Not overly gory, but the suspense factor is wild.

You need to pay attention and see this horror film at the cinemas, like now! Longlegs is a fresh cinema idea in 2024, which is rare.

Believe the hype. 4 Stars. Scary AF!

Post Strike Cinema 24' - Sting

Sting is an Aussie film, however it's set in Naw York, in a similar street/block to the Servant set back on Apple TV+.

Written & directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, the film stars Packed to the Rafters vet, Ryan Corr, Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Robyn Nevin, Noni Hazelhurst, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, and Jermaine Fowler.

Yes theatre legend Robyn Nevin and Better Homes & Gardens queen, Noni Hazelhurst star in a creature feature, horror film.

Sad thing is the film following Charlotte (like Charlotte's web maybe?) who secretly raises a spider as her pet, which then transforms into a giant monster, is just not that scary.

So why is this film, largely following Charlotte, a rebellious 12-year-old girl lives in a dilapidated New York apartment building not scary?

She lives with overworked step-father, Ethan (Corr), her mother Heather and baby half-brother Liam.

When Charlotte stumbles upon a tiny spider hatched from a strange, glowing object that crash-lands in her great-aunt's apartment. At the top of the film a news broadcast is playing. So yes we understand that the spider does in fact come from space. WHAT?

Charlotte then decides to keep the spider as a pet, naming it Sting. Sting two or Sting again has a decent ring for the sequel which could be in the works given the cliffhanger, TV style ending.

Over four days Charlotte cares for Sting, the spider begins to grow at an alarming rate. She initially keeps its size a secret, but as it becomes more difficult to hide, her father and neighbours start to notice strange occurrences around the building.

Sting's growing size and insatiable appetite soon lead to the death of pets (sweet bird) and residents. Charlotte's relationship with her step-father is strained over the reality of her biological father. During a meltdown from Ethan, Sting attacks both parents while Charlotte is nearby oblivious with her brother. Yes noise cancelling headphones can muffle attempted murder by a giant spider.

So that is enough spoilers for now. So sadly I wanted to like this. I love Nevin. But this just didn't work on a number of levels. The setting in the USA, the spider from space, it was all a bit much. Not to mention (again) but its just not scary.

Sadly Australian cinema needs to deliver more than this to get Aussies back at the cinema to see homegrown series.

1.5 Stars.

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Under the Bridge - miniseries

Under the Bridge is another true crime drama miniseries based upon the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey.

I slept on this Disney+ (Hulu in the USA) series which commenced streaming mid-April this year. The basis, on Vancouver Island, Victoria, the series follows the murder of Reena Virk, as a writer enters the hidden world of the accused killers. All young, slightly damaged in the late 90's.

It also has a great soundtrack of late 90's jams.

If you are late to watch the late May finale, Mercy Alone like me. Beware there are spoilers ahead.

In the eight episode, Kelly’s trial gets underway. CMC members Dusty, Laila, and Maya testify against her, but Josephine refuses to do so.

Rebecca encourages Warren to testify. He meets with Suman, who explains that her faith encourages mercy, and she forgives him.

Warren testifies, admitting that he and Kelly beat up Reena before Kelly drowned her. Kelly takes the stand and vehemently denies killing Reena. She is found guilty and given the minimum sentence of 5 years imprisonment.

Rebecca worries that Gabe’s death was a suicide. Cam insists that it wasn’t Rebecca’s fault. She returns to New York to publish her book. Cam learns that she was part of the Adopt Indian Métis Program and was forcibly taken from her birth family. She seeks them out to reconnect.

Suman and Manjit sit in Reena’s room and sense her presence as a Notorious B.I.G song plays. Overall this is the most depressing, full on episode of the run.

It was a very sad, full on true crime series. This however is must watch TV. I am surprised The Bear continues to dominate the Emmy's when there are great under the radar series like this.

Finally in the credits, it explains that the Virks became anti-bullying activists. Suman died in 2018. Rebecca died in 2022. Warren was released on parole in 2010. Kelly appealed her case and was given a life sentence. She confessed to murdering Reena in 2016. Shortly afterwards, she was granted day parole.

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Star Wars: The Acolyte - Season One

The Acolyte (also known as Star Wars: The Acolyte) could be the worst of the Star Wars franchise thus far.

The Acolyte started streaming on Disney+ early June, with its first two episodes. The following six episodes were released weekly.

Part of the Star Wars franchise, set at the end of the High Republic era before the events of the Skywalker Saga, and follows a Jedi investigation into a series of crimes.

Starring an all-star cast, Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, Margarita Levieva, Lauren Brady, Leah Brady, and Harry Trevaldwyn.

The Acolyte is set at the end of the Star Wars franchise's High Republic era, approximately 100 years before 1999's Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Seeing a respected Jedi Master investigating a series of crimes that bring him into contact with a former Padawan learner and reveal sinister forces.

SPOILER ALERTS! Osha has a vision of apparently Mae killing Sol without using weapons and they head out to find them while being watched by Darth Plagueis.

On the ship, Mae breaks free and escapes to Brendok in a capsule while she is followed by Sol; Mae crashes on the planet. Vernestra gathers a group of Jedi to head to Brendok.

On Brendok, Sol, Qimir and Osha begin searching for Mae. Inside the fortress, Sol and Qimir begin to fight as do Osha and Mae. Mae arrives and disarms Sol, but chooses to let him live so he can confess before the Council; Sol reveals that she and Osha are the same person.

Learning that Sol killed her mother, Osha chokes Sol to death with the Force and corrupts the Kyber crystal in Sol's lightsaber; Osha and Mae escape together. Upon arriving, Vernestra discovers Sol's corpse. Osha and Mae reconcile when they are found by Qimir; Osha agrees to train with him if he lets Mae go by erasing her memory.

On Coruscant, Vernestra blames Sol for all the events that occurred on Brendok; Vernestra reveals that Qimir was her apprentice.

Vernestra visits Yoda to tell him everything.

YODA is back baby! However not even Yoda can save this train wreck. As a Star Wars fan from a very young age, these new series are really getting more and more average.

Seriously give this one a miss.

Tomorrow, a real treat from Disney+, Under the Bridge! See you then!

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - All American - Season Six

All American will be the last standing CW series when it returns in 2025 13 episodes, seventh season. Renewed last month, I am predicting this to be the final season, the final US produced CW series.

Lead Daniel Ezra will not be returning as a series regular for the seventh season. Apparently he will feature as a guest star, with other leads also set to make way for new cast members.

All American ended its sixth season on Stan last night, with a wedding. Building for months, the Spencer James and Olivia Baker, arrived in the expanded two episodes. Season 6 episode count, went from 13 to 15 earlier this year. This allowed showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll to give Ezra a fitting farewell, and pay tribute to Spencer and Olivia’s long road to romantic bliss.

If you are not up to date on your Stan stories, watch out, spoilers below the trailer....

When All American was picked up for Season 7 in June, speculation had begun that the show could cast a wave of “next-gen young characters” to keep production costs down for next year’s episodes — and Monday’s finale certainly gave closure to most of its current characters, should they not return in 2025.

A newly married Spencer and Olivia will now live in New York together; Coop got into law school at both GAU and Yale (no decision was made, however); Laura put the Baker house’s deed in Jordan and Layla’s name, so they can have the place and start their new lives there; and Jordan accepted a coaching gig at South Crenshaw High, following in his dad’s footsteps.

There was a very slight cliffhanger. Like nothing life changing, if the series does get cancelled after being renewed. It has happened before!

Hunky Jordan found a baby photo he didn’t recognise in his dad’s old Crenshaw coaching binder. At Spencer and Olivia’s wedding, Jordan presented the photo to his Grandpa Willy, who reluctantly revealed that the child in the photo was Billy’s older brother.

This was a result of a previous relationship Grandma Mary had had, before Willy was in her life. But when Jordan pressed his grandfather for more answers on the child, Willy got agitated and dropped the conversation, leaving us without closure.

Truth bomb from a grandpa!

Will Jordan return in 2025? Here is hoping! The CW have the weakest of all line-ups for the upcoming USA Fall season. With Superman and Lois returning for their swan song in October. Ten episodes and it's the end of the Arrowverse.

This was not All American's worst season, however I think the end is insight.

Honestly no one would miss this series if it ended at the end of its seventh. Tonight on Disney+ we say farewell to Star Wars: The Acolyte, whilst later in the week, The Boys crazy fourth season comes to an end.

Until then bye!

Post Strike Cinema 24' - Twisters

Twisters is my latest visit to the cinema in 2024. Like the previous post, this is not a fresh idea, however a new take on an old hit.

Weather disaster films in this day and age, have a lot more weight than when the 1996 film Twister landed on the big screen.

On the weekly we see, floods, fires, cyclones depending on what season we are in.

Acting as standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane all star in the Oklahoma based sequel.

So far the film has received positive reviews from critics. Including me. Like A Quiet Place: Day One, I was pleasantly surprised.

Also you must see this on the big screen. The Twisters and effects are insane.

Haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado, Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones) gets lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (the handsome Anthony Ramos), to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. She soon crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Anyone but You's Glen Powell), a charming but reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures.

As storm season intensifies, Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves in a fight for their lives as multiple systems converge over central Oklahoma.

Look on paper this sounds like a rip off of the 1996 original. Yes it borrows the name and environmental theme, however with bringing in YouTube channel/influencers, current climate/weather uncertainty, this was worthy of a remaking.

The two hours also flies by like a cow in the Twister like the OG film.

3.5 Stars.

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Fantasmas - Season One

Fantasmas is possibly the weirdest show since Emma Stone's other series of 2024, The Curse.

The six part comedy series created, directed, and written by Julio Torres, concluded yesterday on Binge with the episode The Void.

Torres also stars, on the search for a golden oyster earring, and the people he encounters on the way. Emma Stone guest stars alongside Julia Fox, Ziwe, Alexa Demie, Steve Buscemi & Kim Petras.

The 30 minute, six part series premiered on early June 7, on HBO. It has been a long time between drinks for a 30 minute comedy on the network. With the wait still on for The Righteous Gemstones fourth season along with the return of Somebody Somewhere.

Across the random AF episodes, Julio Torres goes on the search through New York City, for a golden oyster earring, encountering people along the way.

Take a look at the preview below.

This is clearly not for everyone. I binged episodes one to four, before doing the last two week to week as I was desperate for a comedy series on my rotation. That goodness Apple TV+ have also delivered a nice, new wholesome comedy, Land of Women.

I wouldn't see this 100% returning for a second season, however the ending does leave this wide open.

Next week a big week of finales with the expanded lone standing All American finale Tuesday, the very average latest Star Wars series concluding mid-week along with The Boys closing out it's fourth season.

See you then kids!

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Red Eye - miniseries

OK, another UK binge, in record time. This time around, Red Eye which landed on Stan back in April.

Red Eye stars Richard Armitage (Spooks, The Hobbit) and Jing Lusi (Crazy Rich Asians, Gangs of London - also on Stan, where I just started season two today). When Dr. Matthew Nolan (Armitage) is renditioned to China from the UK, inexplicable deaths onboard the red eye flight raise suspicions.

Hana Li (Lusi), the police officer escorting Nolan, forms an unlikely alliance with Head of MI5 Madeleine Delaney and journalist Jess Li, her sister, work to uncover a wider global conspiracy.

The six-part British thriller has Hijack vibes from Apple TV+ with the dreamy Idris Elba. For me Hijack was the better series and I for one cannot wait for season two.

However back to this Stan series, where Lesley Sharp also stars on this all-night flight between London and Beijing.

Spoiler alert below for those like me that slept on this fun, high-energy flight. I honestly felt bad for the other passengers on this mad flight. However it was a fun, easy watch with each episode just spinning past.

In episode six it kicks off with flashback scene, CIA operatives led by Mike Maxwell monitor Nolan and Shen Zhào at the night club as part of an American operation to sabotage the Anglo-Chinese nuclear deal.

After failing to stop Zhào from injecting the nano SIM card into Nolan, Maxwell and Eric Jones murder her and plant her body in Nolan's car. Hana and Nolan's plane lands at a British military airbase in London but escape Tennant and MI6 with the help of Delaney and Jess.

Meanwhile, British security forces identify Zhang and the other operative as freelancers working for a CIA shell company. At the US Embassy, Nolan recognizes that one of the Embassy staff was a staff member at the Beijing night club. Suspecting that the CIA have drugged their drinks Nolan, Hana, Jess, and Delaney overpower their CIA captors.

Maxwell attempts to stop them from leaving the Embassy but Jess hands him a Vodafone chip, which he mistakes for the SIM card. After escaping the Embassy, the four send the file to Tennant, exposing a CIA cyber-operation to cause a meltdown in one of the Anglo-Chinese nuclear power plants in order to damage Sino-British relations.

Maxwell tracks Hana, Nolan, and Delaney down to the grounds of the Chinese Embassy. Maxwell shoots Nolan but is arrested by Chinese soldiers and handed over to Minister Tang to face justice for Zhào's murder. While recovering in hospital, Nolan proposes to Hana.

To avoid damaging United Kingdom-United States relations by exposing the CIA plot, Delaney allows Hana to break a story about MI6 using doctors as unwitting couriers for intelligence operations. During a family gathering, Hana provides her father with files on her mother supplied by the British government.

There are many twists and turns in this fast paced series. You never really know who is good and who is rotten to the core. Across the six episodes there is double crossing, corruption and a fair share of murders on the plane.

There is so much content coming and going on streaming services right now, it's hard to keep up! Hoping over the weekend I can head to the movies too, to bring some cinema to the blog. It's been a hot minute again.

Happy weekend ahead!

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Troppo - Season Two

Troppo season two kicks off six months after Ted Conkaffey (Jane) and Amanda Pharrell (Chamoun) were introduced to viewers in season one.

In season one they solved their first murder case, the unlikely duo is now investigating the bizarre local murder of a healing retreat leader with connections to an exotic drug ring and a ‘bikie’ gang.

While Amanda tangles with an old enemy and finds a new love interest (who is also sort of an enemy for the first four or so episodes), Ted’s past stalks him and his family to Crimson Lake, with deadly consequences.

My father informed me, Troppo is based on the Crimson Lake books, a contemporary crime series set in Queensland, Australia, written by #1 New York Times best-selling author Candice Fox.

Season Two of Troppo is inspired by the second book in the series, Redemption Point.

US actor, Thomas Jane is Ted Conkaffey, while Nicole Chamoun is partner in crime, Amanda Pharrell.

The show is very Australian, a little bit troppo, but a damn easy watch on ABC iView. Watching the first season so recently, it was a damn easy job getting stuck into the second run so quickly after binge watching the first.

I do think I enjoyed the first season a little more, however this was a good little Aussie crime romp.

ABC have served up some decent drama this year. What's next on the schedule ABC? Are we waiting for after the Olympics? Whilst Seven, Nine and Ten are delivering very little drama on free to air TV this year, the ABC have continued to excel. Well done Aunty!

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - The Bear - Season Three

The Bear is back for a tough third season to watch. OK I struggled a few times to get into the Christopher Storer created series FX on Hulu.

Starring hunky AF, Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, alongside, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott and Matty Matheson. The third season really took a lot for me to get into it.

It was released on Disney+ late last month, which ahead of the third season premiere, the show was renewed for a fourth season, which will film back-to-back with the third season.

So here is hoping for a more engaging fourth season. This show has been one of those huge series that everyone talks about. The buzz is WILD. The awards have been many. However until episode six, Napkins, I really struggled to get a run on with the third seasons episodes.

Disney+ in Australia have loads of quality content right now. Not much in the way of local AU content, however some serious overseas content incoming on the daily.

Towards the end of the season we finally get some grit in the episode Ice Chips, with Jamie Lee Curtis returning as Natalie's (Abby Elliot) mother, while she is giving birth.

This was a refreshing return to that chaotic episode last season, Fishes. Remember that crazy ass family dinner?

Episode nine however, Apologies returns to the much-about-nothing season three vibe.

So before season four drops (date TBA) what happened in Forever, the season three finale? SPOILER ALERT!

Carmy, Sydney and Richie attend the Ever closing dinner. Richie spends time with Garrett and Jessica while they run service, while Carmy reconnects with Luca, who plans to stay in Chicago for a few months to visit his sister.

Sydney converses with Luca and various renowned chefs as they share their stories from past kitchens, and is struck by their aversion to dysfunctional kitchen environments.

Carmy confronts David Fields, his abusive former boss, and accuses him of ruining his self-worth; Fields snidely claims Carmy should be thanking him as his abuse made Carmy a better chef.

Adam reminds Sydney about his prior offer, to which she states she is still interested.

Chef Terry explains her choice to close the restaurant to Carmy, explaining she was tired of the constant stress and wanted to finish her career on her own terms. After the service, Sydney hosts an afterparty at her apartment attended by Luca, Chef Terry, and members of The Bear and Ever's staff.

Noticing the Original Beef's old five-star review and thinking about how the staff has changed since, Sydney runs out of her apartment and has a panic attack.

Carmy checks his phone to discover several missed calls from Cicero and Computer, along with the Tribune review; to his anger, the review is mixed.

Concluding with a To Be Continued screen, will we be waiting until June 2025 for the next instalment? If seasons one, two and three have a pattern, it's that all stream in late June. Until then, Jeremy Allen White, stay sexy!

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Fake - Season One

Fake Premiered on Paramount+ this Thursday, I was done by Friday evening. Yes it's that addictive.

Gold Logie award-winning actress Asher Keddie, who recently shone in Strife is back with another A grade Aussie drama.

Following her run in Lost Flowers Of Alice Heart, Nine Perfect Strangers and Offspring), Keddie is joined by David Wenham (Elvis, Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers & The Return Of The King).

This gripping eight-part series that explores love in a world of liars, cheats, fantasists and online dating apps.

Now this came at a good time, as a lot of recent Paramount+ titles haven't interested in. If I was honest, it could be my first choice of streaming service to cut. They are becoming a little like the Hunger Games, with so many options, such varied content across all streamers.

Fake is getting all sorts of good reviews online. The Logies missed this seriously good local yarn. Not to mention you cannot forget how brilliant Heather Mitchell is as Keddie's mother. Brilliant role for Mitchell. Also Nicholas Brown is also excellent as her bestie Anton.

Anton's husband in the show may also be familiar for fans of the Secret Life of Us.

If this show has wet your whistle here are some other Paramount+ titles: A Gentleman In Moscow, Knuckles, Elsbeth, Little Wing, Ferrari,Star Trek: Discovery Season Five, The Gilded Age Season Two, NCIS: Sydney, Frasier, The Inspired Unemployed (Impractical) Jokers, ARK: The Animated Series,The Family Stallone Season Two and Top Gear Australia.

So do yourself a favour this wet, cold weekend, give Fake a go. You will love it, finish it over the weekend then join the water cooler conversations next week while school holidays takes half the office hostage.

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Troppo - Season One

Troppo is an Australian series which I must admit I slept on, hard. Cause once I started this, I was glued.

OnABC back in February 2022, the series based on the best-selling novel Crimson Lake by Candice Fox, in which a former police officer helps a private investigator look for a missing man in Far North Queensland commenced.

Good news for latecomers like me, Troppo's second season would premiere on today on ABC TV, while getting a streaming run on Amazon Prime later this month.

I can't believe I caught up just in time. The eight episodes just breezed by. With a killer local cast including US lead Thomas Jane as Ted Conkaffey. The series also stars Nicole Chamoun as Amanda Pharrell, David Lyons as Inspector Lou Damford, Sun Park as Yoon Sun Park, Yerin Ha as Ah Rah Park, Ling Cooper Tang as Sergeant Carrie Hench, Kate Beahan as Olivia, Cramer Cain as Wayne & Peta Wilson as Eve.

The series was was filmed in the Gold Coast hinterland of Queensland, Australia, although the story is set in Far North Queensland. Screen Queensland announced the completion of filming of Season Two on October 16, 2023, with the second series to be set six months after the first season.

I am throughly looking forward to jumping into season two over the weekend. I am thinking it's going to be another cold, wet weekend in Sydney. Despite rolling into a new financial year.

So if free streaming and local crime dramas are up your alley, Troppo on ABC iView is a damn fine watch. Next up local series Fake with the extremely talented Asher Keddie!

New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming - Clipped - Miniseries

Clipped just concluded on Disney+ as one of their FX on Hulu pieces of content on the Australian app.

Created by Gina Welch, based on the ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs.

Following the Veil, this miniseries premiered early June, with a short six episode run. It is your first post, in the New Financial Year 2024/2025 Streaming series.

Across the six episodes (where no one wins) Clipped focuses on the downfall of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, amid the team's drive to win a championship under coach Doc Rivers.

Starring, Laurence Fishburne as Doc Rivers, Ed O'Neill as Donald Sterling and Aussie legend Jacki Weaver as Shelly Sterling. I literally just watched Weaver in a fun made for streaming film, Stage Mother, alongside Lucy Liu.

Weaver is killing it in the USA right about now!

Also in the early episodes Cleopatra Coleman as V. Stiviano is excellent. Her character gets a little less air time as the series rolled on.

In episode six, Keep Smiling, Doc & the Clippers are facing a big playoff series against Oklahoma City, but the players are distracted by Donald’s disastrous TV interview with Anderson Cooper.

They lose the next game, and soon enough, they’re eliminated from the playoffs, with Doc reminding his players of how much they overcame just to get there.

Donald Sterling wraps the series annoyed that Shelly is trying to line up buyers for his team, and after his on-air meltdown, Shelly starts thinking about invoking a clause in their trust where she can remove him if he’s deemed incompetent.

She has Donald meet with a neurologist, and he doesn’t do great on the test, with the neurologist suggesting he may have Alzheimer’s. But Donald shrugs it off, and when Shelly brings him the hyper-enthusiastic tech mogul Steve Ballmer, who offers to buy the Clippers for $2 billion, Donald dismisses him.

Left with no other options, Shelly uses the neurologist’s evaluation to get Donald removed from the trust, and Donald is incensed.

Donald takes her to court, where he declares that he runs the team. Shelly testifies to Donald’s failing mental faculties, and he gets belligerent, yelling at the judge and calling Shelly a pig. The judge rules in Shelly’s favor, clearing the way for her to sell the team to Ballmer.

Shelly doesn’t exactly end up smelling like roses, either. Even her best friend Justine turns on her after she stays with Donald following the sale.

And after a heart-to-heart with LeVar Burton helps him get in touch with his anger, Doc Rivers tells Shelly off, too. Even though she sold the team, she and Donald still own their practice facility, and she’d still get a ring if they won a title, and “that absolutely fills me with rage,” he flatly tells her.

But the saddest ending of all has to be V. Stiviano’s, with her lawyer reminding her that Shelly is still suing her for the duplex, just as her finances are drying up. She sells her Ferrari but keeps the vanity plates and goes to court to face Shelly, telling her that Donald would have taken her side. But then Donald enters the courthouse and takes Shelly’s hand, leaving V. devastated.

On the witness stand, V. says she was Donald’s right-hand arm, even though she had no official employment record, and that he wanted to take care of her.

But in Donald’s sworn testimony, he says that the cars he gave her were his, and he only put them in her name because of her criminal record. V. loses in court, and we see her taking a sad walk through her empty duplex before moving out, carving “STERLING PROPERTIES” into the wall with her keys.

She has a drink with Deja to commiserate, but even there, a couple of drunk jerks make fun of her and call her a whore. When she stands up for herself, then V. angrily confronts them, she gets punched right in the face.

Bruised and battered, V. turns back to what she knows best: working for Donald, fetching his coffee and medications and signing for his deliveries.

Donald sunbathes nude, somehow coming out of this scandal with a billion-dollar windfall. The Clippers players are befuddled by new owner Steve Ballmer’s rabid enthusiasm, but they bond by playing a midnight game of street basketball, far away from the cameras.

As for Doc, he hits the Clippers court with Elgin Baylor, shooting hoops and talking about their legacies.

Doc wants to be remembered as a winner. But he admits his fanatical drive to win led to his wife just filing for divorce. Elgin isn’t worried about his legacy, though; he just enjoys the sound of a basketball swishing through the net.

So overall it was a fairly depressing finale. The series is full of unlikable people, real people. However Weaver as Shelly Sterling really steals the show in this last episode. Well done.

Post Strike Cinema 24' - A Quiet Place: Day One

A Quiet Place: Day One could have just been another lame ass, half-baked prequel. However Day One is actually a damn fine little film.

Maybe my expectations for a good film are so low this year, that he third instalment in the A Quiet Place film series actually kept me on the edge of my seat for this survival/horror/end of days film.

Starring Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn, and Alex Wolff, with Djimon Hounsou reprising his role from the second film.

Lupita Nyong'o plays a terminally ill woman during the beginning stages of an invasion in New York City by blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. The film received positive reviews from critics, with N’Yongo’s performance garnering widespread acclaim.

Honestly the sweet cat, Frodo made a lot of the film for me. So sweet! However, apparently Nyong'o's had asked the director, if they could change the animal due to a fear of cats, which she ultimately overcame with cat therapy.

I couldn't imagine this film without Frodo.

Honestly I am not surprised Emily Blunt revealed that director, Michael Krasinski has plans for a third and final A Quiet Place film. Acknowledging that he had wanted to see how the second instalment was received before moving forward on the next film, she stated it is intended to be a trilogy.

In July, Blunt confirmed that Krasinski is working on a third and final instalment, separate from the spin-off movie, with intentions to once again serve as director.

In February 2022, A Quiet Place Part III was officially announced with a scheduled release date in 2025.

So we will see the fourth and final film next year. Yet another sequel here we come in the new year.

That said, this has been a surprise little film series to go far. The day one story was interesting, if not a little predictable, but still good.

I might be grading this a little high, however it was good to get back to the cinema, see you for Twisters in a week and a bit!

3.5 Stars.

#RATED - Winter's Cumin' Streaming 24'

Well here we go again. Welcome to the new financial year. Hello 2024/2025! Winter saw a load of new, returning and concluding series land.

Station 19 closed its fire station doors, The Big Door Prize was only axed over the weekend on Apple TV+ and The Girls on the Bus only got one season, despite feeling like a miniseries.

There was loads of great Aussie content including the returning champion series Colin from Accounts. Yes it topped the Spring 2022 TV Finales, if you look below it may have also been rather successful over this past quarter.

The ABC delivered some local dramas and comedies, with the fun White Fever and return to Ladies in Black.

SBS gave us Swift Street, whilst Stan gave us a very dark series, Exposure.

The writers strikes are well and truly over for network TV from the US of mother fucking A. All American (and it's spin-off) will concluding shortly. With All American returning next year at some time for a cheaper less lead Spencer James season seven.

So scroll below, find your new financial year viewing below. It's cold (and at times wet) outside, so rug up, fire up your streaming service of choice as I tried to watch one thing from most of them. Next quarter, it's my catch up quarter with only All American (plus the Homecoming spin-off conclusion) coming, I have loads of time to catch up on titles I may have missed. Like Troppo the Aussie mystery from 2022. So far it's damn good!

Until then, if you need more series to catch up on, below are my previous RATED's:
