Winter be Bingeing 26' - The Airport Chaplain - Season One

Good news international readers, The Airport Chaplain will now be streaming on Netflix, internationally. In Australia it's free on SBS On Demand. With all episodes landing yesterday.

I had a day off yesterday, so I smashed all eight 30 minute episodes. If you like a more traditional way of viewing the series, you are welcome to, with the first two episodes airing last night, with double episodes continuing to air weekly on Wednesdays at 8:30pm.  

This great local series, based in Melbourne is led by Hugo Weaving (Slow Horses, Love Me) and Shabana Azeez, breakout star of the Emmy® and Golden Globe Award®-winning drama series The Pitt.

The latest SBS Original drama, takes audiences inside the high-stakes world of a bustling international airport, told through the struggles, triumphs and unexpected connections of the workers who keep it running. 

This follows double Logie nominated SBS series, Homebodies, which didn't win the best miniseries, but Claudia Karvan did win for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.

Funnily enough, Karvan also stars in The Airport Chaplain.

Alongside Karvan, Azeez and Weaving, Thomas Weatherall as Johnny Flick, Arka Das as Sami Rahman, Erroll Shand as Lex Pascoe and Claude Jabbour as Anthony Cole all star.

At the centre of The Airport Chaplain is Tobias Wallace (Weaving), a fast-moving fixer with a constantly ringing phone, pockets full of cash and an unorthodox approach to the daily crises unfolding inside the terminal. Convinced the airport couldn’t run without him, Tobias has never encountered a problem he couldn’t solve. Until he meets his formidable new boss Mira (Azeez), who considers him a walking liability. Their clash sparks a power struggle that reverberates through the terminal, affecting the cleaners, baggage handlers and passengers who are all navigating their own hopes, challenges and life-changing moments amid the constant flow of arrivals and departures. 

Airports are interesting places. A show based around an airport, the passengers that visit, the staff that work there, a peak behind the curtains to where your bag goes. This was great.

No special effects, no insane plot. No superheros. Just real humans, with real emotions. I enjoyed this a lot.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure was mine.

Thomas Weatherall is an outstanding young, local talent. His role as a border security officer was great. A big improvement on his time on Heartbreak High.

There is so much local content at present. Which is great. On Paramount+ Dalliance launches tonight. If you want more Hugo Weaving, he is joined by Heather Mitchell, Georgie Parker (yes from A Country Practice), David Wenham and more.

Colin From Accounts is in the home stretch now on Binge, with the final (ever) episode streaming soon. It will be replace on Binge with the second run of High Country. Whilst on Netflix, My Brilliant Career looks to be a favourite for next year's Logies. Hopefully The Airport Chaplain gets a look in next year. Despite being released so early in the Logie 2027 period.
