Sydney Theatre Company 2011 - the White Guard

Another week another Russian play, can you believe it!

So after seeing the screen legend Judy Davis last week in the Seagull, this week I choose to have a look at the White Guard starring one woman Miranda Otto and 13 men! Wow what a cast, 13 men and only one strong female role. WOW!

So again slightly long, slightly depressing but overall good and way better with a full cast and additional Andrew Upton Q&A after the show which made the evening so much better and made me realise what the play was all about and the meaning of the staging, the use of song and the task of having an all male cast with one screen gem like Miranda Otto in the mix.

So The White Guard Q&A rates 5 stars and the whole evening rates a pretty impressive 3 and a half white stars with a little vodkha to wash it all down.

Next week no Rusiian plays for me but maybe a spot of Transformers for something light?

Film Freak 2011 - Bridesmaids v.2 Vs No Strings Attached

So it was time to take the parents to the 5 star viewing entertainment and film phenomenon that is Bridesmaids and of course both my olds loved it fully sick.

So I would like to compare this film this time to a similar rom com/chick flick/kinda gross ou film, No Strings Attached and surpise surprise No Strings attached starring the less than perfect Ashton Kutcher and the loveable Natalie Portman. So both films have tragic leads, Bridesmaids main star wins out by a mile as her battle with Rose Byrne is epic and killer.

The lack of funnies in No Strings attached kills the Com bit from the Rom Com genre and the sex is so lame in this film it definately doesn't deserve an MA rating. Bridesmaids for it's lovely crude language and it's sexual references wins out in this battle too.

No Strings attached is predictable and borderline boring as bat shit, Bridesmaids holds your attention for the entire 2 hours and makes you want more. I wanted more so much I sat through the entire thing again, No Strings Attached I could never sit through again.

Okay so it's a win to Bridesmaids over No Strings Attached and Bridesmaids again rates 5 stars.

Album of the Year nomination number 2 - 2011

So last year my BLOG believed that I Believe you Liar by Megan Washington was the album of the year and the album that summed up 2010 and held it's ground the entire year, this year the Wombats from the UK were my first pick and heading into month number 7 for 2011 I finally have hand picked the years second album of the year in no particular order it is an English invasion this year and it can only be one woman.

Adele's 21 is universally loved and strikes a chord with young and old. Adele has the voice and not the gimmick to sell millions of records and singles worldwide. Adele has not arrived in eggs at music award ceremonies, made videos with Rebbecca Black or had twitter wars she has just created good songs about heartbreak which everyone can understand.

Rolling in the Deep was a monster success and Someone Like You is now equally as big. Tracks like Rumour Has it and Turning Tables show this album has a lot more to throw at the charts and music fans worldwide.

Adele 21 a BIG album in 2011 and my second nomination to be crowned this year's album of the year.

Why is theatre depressing - The Seagull?

So this is a review and a discussion point? Why can theatre make me go home and smash an entire block of chocolate after seeing a play where the ending leaves you speechless.

This is what happens after you see the Seagull, well it did for me.

Don't get me wrong the acting was ace as and the season is totally sold out and you cannot get a ticket for love or money and god damn Judy Davis is in it. As is David Wenham playing a toy boy to Judy Davis and my little favourite Emily Barclay. That girl rules.

This play is great but so gosh damn depressing in parts. Judy Davis is great, Emily Barvlay, I love you and David Wenham is under stated.

Gonna have to give this one 3 and a half stars cause I need to lose weight and I ate too much chocolate for one boy in a night after the play.

Film Freak 2011 - Super 8

WOW!

Two movies in two days, I love it! Super 8 and Bridesmaids, I couldn't have picked two more different movies if I tried!

Super 8 is a good thriller/action/comign of age/romance/drama film all rolled into one, yes it has a little bit of everything, even horror.

I like they was this film was done and it was very apparent it was done by the same guy behind Lost, because nothing ever gets fully explained until the end. Speaking of Lost I rwally should go back to that now I now there is finally a conclusion.

So back to Super 8, the effects, the acting, the story are all great and it really creates tension well, you are sitting there and you are like, OMG this is wicked, or OMG I think I shat myself like one of the women in Bridesmaids.

The film is effective and really awesome, I would have to give this Super 8 a super 4 stars for being original in a non original marketplace.

Tight arse Tuesday film tonight - Super 8

Review tomorrow and stay tuned it's 29 days till I head off on the road to TEXAS, fuck yeah!

Film Freak 2011 - Bridesmaids

** Please note advance screening - opens Thu 16 June 2011 **

Okay so this is an amazing film! With a budget of $32,500,000 and making a total of $124,082,240 so far this film is a runaway bride success.

Rose Byrne is terrific as a mega prim and proper bitch, the main character and writer Kristen Wiig excels as this out of luck lady attending her best friends wedding and also thrown the task of the maid of honour.

Look things go pear shaped, women act like real women and everyone appears to have a really fun time.

The mix of characters is terrific and the music used during the film is awesome too.

It is a MASSIVE call to make but this is definitely the comedy of the year and definitely in my top 3 films. This movie shines and makes other Hollywood comedies look so lame in comparison.

Bridesmaids, watch this space I'll probably see it again as it is AMAZING! 5 full blown wedding stars.

I will also start posting my 2011 birthday gift register, starting today for all your holiday weekend shoppers, so here goes my list:

Big Love Seasons 3 & 4 (god I love a good cult - LOL)
Damages season 3
90210 (new edition) season 1
Papa Vs Pretty - United In Isolation (album)

Top 5 @ 5 - Kylie Numbers

1. Love at First Sight
2. Spinning Around
3. What Do I Have to Do?
4. Cowboy Style & Too Far (tied from her amazing indie album Impossible Princess)
5. Hand on Your Heart

All the Gays love Kylie and so do the Westies

So my fourth outing to see the queen of gay pop Ms Kylie M I found her show to be a vast improvement on her third one I saw back at ACER arena a few years back. I am pretty sure I missed the X tour and maybe on purpose as that album kinda sucked.

I must say my best experiences seeing Kylie have been at the Entertainment Centre and this was no different. The set was perfect the sound was great. Gyspy and the Cat the supports who have come along way from just being on Triple J's unearthed site. The Melbourne boys did a good job with a solid set including hits "Time to Wander" & the epic "Jona Vark". I loved them after this gig.

The quick DJ set before Kylie was qucik but good and everything now running to time, it was Kylie time.

I heard the water features were the highlight and so too were the dancers.

Kylie had it all going on, except one thing, her set list. The new songs kinda had to be performed with lot's of distractions including dancers, homo erotic video screen movies etc. Spinning Around and What Do I Have to Do were epic tunes that brought the crowd to full attention. There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart) a cover of Eurythmics was definately an epic and a crowd fav.

The set then went into overdrive with a great version of Love at First Sight, Better the Devil You Know and the two fine tracks from the Album Better than Today & Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love).

This was when the concert really went well, Kylie does the best when she plays crowd favourites and works the room, the show went from good to amazing as it went on and the finale was spectaular, All the Lovers is an average song but live and with all the special effects it was super. Kylie overall did a great job after a tough year and an album that has not done particulary well.

I enjoyed this show the most out of all four shows I have seen with Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour being the worst out at ACER. On a Night Like This Tour & Kylie Fever 2002 were the other two highlight shows at the peak of her career.

Overall my review is all of the shop and at times so was the Aphrodite World Tour however this was pure pop fun and has to rate 4 stars for it's great dancing and set. A better set list would have given this five stars, dumping some of the new songs would have been a guarantee for this to be a five star performance.

Theatre - The Kiss

Finishing up today after an extended run, the Kiss at Belvoir Streets downstairs theatre is as I found on another review:

take four short stories of the same title, The Kiss, by four different writers and deliver them to the downstairs Belvoir stage unabridged and “untampered” with.

It's an interesting approach and it's not so much a play but four stories mashed up. I enjoyed some stories more than others which I think most would, however the lengths of some stories is very interesting. Some of short and sweet but one in particular was extremely long and drawn out.

The four cast are strong and good in all their different roles.

It was a little long for a downstairs play at Belvoir Street and the change in tone in all the stories and the mash is very weird at times. There is no real link between the four stories except their title.

In the end this was okay, nothing to write home about and it rates 2 kiss worthy stars.

Film Freak 2011 - X-Men - First Class

Sot after the woeful Wolverine movie the X-Men team are back and they pack a punch with the original story behind X-Men and being with them is a great cast including the dreamy Rose Byrne and the amazing James McAvoy. And with having a strong cast a far fetched action plot seems someone do-able.

Anyway X-Men - First Class or whatever they are calling it is a great film, it has some history, some romance, some drama and some damn fine action. The action scenes make the movie but the theme of conforming and fitting in is great. Loved it!

X-Men First Class so far is definitely my favourite action film of 2011. Great cast, great action, a little long but it held my attention fairly well, so let's just hope they green light a sequel on this and not the god awful Wolverine one, god that was rank.

X-Men gets an X rated 4 and a half stars.

Top 5 @ 5 - Wed 8 June 2011

1. Bliss N Eso -Family Affair
2. Seeker Lover Keeper - Light All My Lights
3. Adele - Rumour Has it
4. Diafrix - Simple Man {Ft. Daniel Merriweather}
5. Foster The People - Call It What You Want

Lining up for food/meals in Sin City

So what the fuck is up with lining up for resturants/food in Sydney now. On Sunday I waited around 40 minutes to be served Fish & Chips @ Watsons Bay. CRISIS!

Anyway since when did waiting for food in this city become exceptable and something we come to expect? Discuss..........

Film Freak 2011 - Snowtown

It's been a while since I have seen an Aussie film and well did this one pack a punch. Snowtown by some has been called this year's Animal Kingdom, but Animal Kingdom it is not, that film was terrific but also didn't make crime seem all that bad. Snowtown in parts made me feel sick (maybe it was the Watson's Bay Fish & Chips) or maybe it was just the torture scene, you'll know the one if you've seen it.

The movie does not try and be anything it's not and is a real gutsy true crime story that shocked me to the core.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it (well the bits I could watch without hiding) but some parts were just too shocking for words.

The relatively unknown cast did well but the one slip up in this true event piece was a rego sticker on the card marked 2011 which didn't sit well with me.

However for an Aussie film this is a triumph and a great effort. A shocking crime and truly shocking actions equalled a solid effort, Snowtown rates 3 stars.

2. Bliss N Eso - Family Affair
3. Diafrix - Simple Man (feat. Daniel Merriweather)
4. Owl Eyes - Raiders
5. 360 - Throw it Away (feat. Josh Pyke)

Oh and yeah it's like 41 days to I land into Dallas, giddy up baby giddy, giddy up!
