It's definitely School Holidays Again

Why? Because as I left IKEA Tempe (new store) there is a kid being a total cunt to their parent.

And for some holiday cheer the lovely Lady Gaga is at it again with releasing a tune titled "Stuck On Fuckin' You":

PS Happy New Year is coming......

Film Freak 2011 - The Iron Lady

Oh Meryl, you've done it again and it looks like the awards are going to pile up after your award winning performance in the Iron Lady. Told in flash backs and flash forwards the film works but also drags a bit, but some of Meryl's dialogue is just perfect.

The biographical flick based on British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, is good an also doco based. I learnt a lot whilst enjoying Meryl just show why she is one of the queens of the silver screen.

I enjoyed this almost like The Kings Speech as you are just watching a well made, well acted feature that pretty much ticks all the boxes, it's a safe smash for the crowded Boxing Day release schedule.

3 stars.

Happy Holidays Part Two - Boxing Day and Album of the Year

So after a load of food in my belly and a swim, a DVD and present opening yesterday it is time to finally unveil and get into my BLOG's album of the year, and this year I had four nominations and I have decided to rank them 1-4.

So let's kick off at Number four and this goes to the almighty WOMBATS! Well done their album The Wombats Proudly Present... This Modern Glitch, the album was an indie smash hit with big tracks like "Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)", "Anti D", "Jump into the Fog" & "Techno Fan". The album is a favourite around the indie hipsters but it just didn't have the steam to get it over the line with this year's biggest album of the year.

Coming in just ahead of it, Jay Z & Kanye West team up for Watch the Throne, it's crazy and huge, it has sold 1,166,000 in the USofA! The album featured the smash hit track "Otis", my favourite "That's My Bitch" and also "Why I Love You". The album has had a monster 6 singles to come from it and it's deluxe version is one of the most amazing CD packagaing I have ever seen, just lush. Okay so this is the Hip Hop release of the year but not my overall album of the year.

Now to the album that almost got their and I almost made it a tie this year but that's not fair as one album shined just that bit brighter. So the 2nd album of the year had some of the biggest singles of the year and just keep going and going! It's ADELE & 21!

As of the end of November this album has sold over 13 million copies and every single has been covered one way or another in Glee. "Someone Like You", "Rolling in the Deep", "Turning Tables", "Set Fire to the Rain" and more! Yes songs from this album has been covered, remixed, played live during Linkin Park sets, yes Linkin Park! Adele proves a song and it's lyrics are way more important than a slutty video or a stupid outfit, for Adele, it's a piano and a MASSIVE ballard. No one can deny, Adele is the biggest world wide star today, her album has been played in every country I have visited this year, and she is just ace but not fully as as 21 was Album of the year number 2.

So what is number One?

Yes GOTYE!

A great Australian album and voted by Triple J listeners as the album of the year and with the ARIA biggest single of 2011, "Somebody That I Used to Know". This song was just amazing and has crossed him over from being a Triple J artist to a mainstream success. And there is nothing wrong with that when you release an album like this. "Eyes Wide Open" is awesome and "I Feel Better" and "In Your Light" are just totally inspirational.

An album like this totally deserves the attention and respect it is gaining and I think 2012 will be huge for GOTYE and the man at every festival will continue to impress crowds.

GOTYE is gonna be one to watch so check him out.

Happy Holidays and Happy Boxing Day, Melbourne test, Sydney to Hobart race and anything else going on today.

Film Freak 2011 - New Years Eve

With a star studded line up and New Years Eve totally just around the corner, it's time to hang up with Hollywood's biggest stars and enjoy some rom com fun and games.

Oh and the stars, the best of them, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry and surprisingly Zac Efron, yes Zac Efron and Michelle Pfeiffer (god she looked clapped out though),
Hilary Swank was also quite awesome in her touching role.

The movie really jumps all over the place and Jon Bovi really stinks but overall this movie is not as bad as all the critics say it, sure it's no "Jack and Jill" that is so bad that it doesn't care, it has soul and has a purpose.

Me and the group (and I mean group) I saw it with, all laughed, cried and enjoyed it. However Katherine Heigl you suck honey and what was with that frock at the end of the film....

Overall it is a three star film, but three bright new years stars..

Film Freak 2011 - Jack & Jill

OMG Adam Sandler just doesn't care anymore and is there anything wrong with that, he is a funny guy and had his day and now he just puts out films for a little extra pocket money.

Jack & Jill is such a bad film that it is almost good. Katie Holmes is woeful, however Adam Sandler's children in the film are really not that bad.

The winner of the film is Jill - Adam Sandler as a lady, well a lady that looks a lot like Adam Sandler and a very bad tranny.

Was there a need for this film, short answer no, but it is mildly entertaining and you know we all need some stress release in 2011 and when Christmas is around the bend we all need a laugh, so on that note I rate Jack & Jill 2 and a half stars.

Film Freak 2011 - The Ides of March

Two days this week and two very different films but again it's all in the cast:

Ryan Gosling - WOW - Handsome, and the actor of 2011 hands down!
George Clooney - Creepy yet seductive and believeable, just the way a politican needs to be.
Philip Seymour Hoffman - an old trooper from way back when
Evan Rachel Wood - Fantastic!

Great cast and great plot twists, a little drawn out in parts but overall not a bad effort for a film directed by the minor star George Clooney as Ryan Gossling really steals the show.

The Ides of March is a political thriller with romance, drama, a bit of suspense and a lot of twists and turns throughout the fairly fast paced movie.

I must say i was a little restless in parts and the ending was less than statisfactory, you really wanted more and wanted more loose ends tied up.

All in all a good cheap Tuesday film, I give it 3 and a half winter night stars.

Film Freak 2011 - Contagion

What a star studded cast firstly:
Matt Damon - Gosh he doesn't even have to play ugly anymore, he is totally foul!
Laurence Fishburne - I thought it was Samuel Jackson till I saw the credits
Jude Law - Not so hot anymore
Gwyneth Paltrow - Really played ugly and dying well
Kate Winslet - her tits remained covered in this film

And many more across the globe as this film headed to Hong Kong (yes my Honkers BLOG entries can be found filed under November) and the USA.

The film started well with the disease spreading and Gwyneth Paltrow's character biting the dust and therefore killing her son by infecting him and leaving Matt Damon all by himself to become a boring widow.

But somewhere in the middle the film lost it's place and really just lost it's way completely and the end felt like it just had to try and wrap this up somewhere as it had already being going on for way too long.

It was good and enjoyable as it really was a good cast just a little lacking in resolution and content.

If it's still bad weather on the weekend and this is showing maybe give it a go, if not there is always DVD next Winter (but wait isn't it Winter now???)

2 and a half sick ass stars.

It's not footy season but there is an event at SFS

Yeah it's the almighty chart topper and Urban superstar Eminem. Not a lot could be said last night for Lil Wayne's dreadful performance and his full set of hoochie dancers who were so not appropriate for the 12 year old screaming girls in front of me.

So as I finally got into the Roosters home ground and venue definitely not suitable for large numbers of people and large numbers of young teenage brats I hear the tail end of what probably was a great set for Adelaide's own Hilltop Hoods, who's new album is set to feature SIA and come out late summer 2012.

Lil Wayne really was a horrid intro to the night with all his songs sounding the same and slightly in good need of some auto tune action. I really wish the young people would enjoy more sensible music in the year 2012.

Now other than the nightmare and drama of getting in and around the large half full venue there was the cold and wet weather to contend with, clearly some people though denim underwear was on the menu on a night where it was never going to reach 20 degrees.

My highlight early on was seeing the Big Brother contestant who turkey slapped a female housemate. What a title to carry.

So now after my social commentary and my observations of the Mt Druitt types attending it's onto the main man and a man who has dominated charts for a lot of my adult life.

He has had serious hits "Stan", almost parody moments "Real Slim Shadey" and "Just Lose it" and then their is the encore and soundtrack number "Lose Yourself".

His set was varied and thick and fast, he covered a lot of his back catalogue with almost a mix tape approach just keeping the tunes bangin out and the samples flying. His recent hits were big with the 12 year olds but it was his old magic that gained him his current status and past fame (pre rehab).

Enimen would have been grand if his sound was better and his interaction with the crowd had been present. After seeing Dolly (another international mega star) this failed to hit the mark with me.

2 cold and wet stars.

First Dolly Parton and now

Mr. Eminem! OMG, it's time to get my rap on today!

See you at the Football Stadium, lighters up!

HoMeBaKeD!

Getting to Homebake at around 3:30pm is perfect, their are no line ups to get in, the weather is fine (and yesterday it was perfect with no clouds, no rain, no horrid heat - beauty!) and the crowd is well pissed.

We checked out the amazing Architecture in Helsinki, they were great and a clear highlight. I love these guys and later saw the lead lady checking out Ladyhawke, just love!

Architecture in Helsinki set was almost a best of with big fun hits like "That Beep", "I Know Deep Down", "Escapee" and more fun! I really loved it, would have loved a cover, but I can win everything.

I then moved on with my crew for a bit (and I mean a bit) of Kimbra, loved her dress, like her, walked in on "Settle Down", my least favourite. "Good Intent", "Limbo" and the last one "Cameo Lover" were fun but she was a little drowned out by Drapht towards the end of the set. But the Big Top was the most full it was all day for this young Kiwi.

Then whilst smashing a BBQ Pork bun or three we heard the monster sounds of Drapht, what a year for that man, "Rapzunzel" definitely you can let ya hair down.

Heard a bit of Daniel Merriweather's "Chainsaw in the distant too, will see him live one of these days.

Then chilled on the grass, enjoying the people, the weather and the one crazy ride of the day and the big sounds of "The Jezabels", man they are popular!

Heard a bit of Goyte from our chilled out spot, a little disappointing with the sound and choice of songs for his set. I heard the big tune from the coffee cart "Somebody That You Used to Know".

Walked of to see some "Seeker Lover Keeper" action but the line was large and then just gave in and caught my other favourite Kiwi girl who has been in hiding Ms Ladyhawke! And she was fun, all her fav's were their "Dusk til Dawn", "Paris is Burning", "Magic" and "My Delirium", she also played a lot of new ones and a good one called Sunday Drive.

And guess what I happened to find this on the YouTube!

Then rounding of the night was Cut Copy from Melbourne. I saw these guys in the same spot in 2008, I missed the 2009 Homebake due to a major mood swing. 2010 Homebake went bye bye. And it seemed they didn't bring the magic (and the packed tent) that they did those three years ago.

They have been nominated for a Grammy but they still didn't party like 08.

Anyway they did all their hits from their latest "Blink & You'll Miss a Revolution" (my personal fav), "Need You Now" & "Take me Over". They did some from "in Ghost Colours" but they could have done "Faraway" my fav in my opinion. Of course they did "Lights and Music" and "Hearts of Fire". A little bit of a disappointing end but still enjoyable, the crowds then seemed to all be leaving during "Need you Now" and the Grinderman set was losing people rapidly, a weird choice for the closer on the Homebake Classic Edition.

My only criticism of the "Classic Edition" brand is where was Spiderbait, the Gurge, You am I, TISM, Frenzal Rhomb, The Whitlams? And also missing some of the year's hottest Aussie stars like Boy & Bear and The Living End (also filed under Classic).

Anyway a great day, great vibe, not many young brats, a lot of music lovers and sensible festival clothes, love it!

Homebake 2011, a success but there are points to build on going forward into the future of music festivals, 4 stars

The countdown to Homebake!

OMG it is here today and here is what I am pumped for!

OMG it's a Kiwi!

OMG it's Daniel Merriweather!

It's the J Award winning Goyte - holy poo cakes

Another Kiwi lady what is this, Ladyhawke ALERT!

OMG it's some Grammy award nominated CUT COPY -

And finally the best three Aussie ladies in music right now!

The Dark Room - Belvoir Street

A scary and real life look at the territory and it's divides between the police and the people who sit just outside the law.

At times frightening in the pitch black downstairs theatre at Belvoir St, this well done play has now been extended till the 11th of December.

Brendan Cowell who is always great and Leah Purcell really excelled in her role as a social worker.

The Dark Room whilst dark is extremely enjoyable, definately not one for people who are offended by strong thems and language.

The Dark Room rates 4 dark stars.
