Movie Matinee Madness - Life of the Party

SPOILER ALERT - this film does not suck, here is the trailer...

Unlike some of McCarthy's recent films, this actually is a feel good film, maybe not super funny, but you leave feeling warm and rather cheesy (there are a lot of cheese references in this film, trigger warning if you can't deal with diary like me).

With a truly all star cast McCarthy is joined by husband and writer of the film Ben Falcone who plays a lovely Uber driver in the film, and a string of male HBO comedy kings including JIAN YANG! Yes! Jimmy O. Yang joins the crew along with Mike from Veep, actually Matt Welsh. Now here is the real spoiler, Christina Aguilera actually appears in the film, yes X-Tina!

Maya Rudolph also joins the fun as McCarthy's best friend and the team of young girls (like in Blockers) showcase the power of women together as one.

Like I Feel Pretty this is a girl power film in the middle of the #MeToo movement. It's never been more important for strong female roles on the big screen. We already have a number on the small screen like Claire Danes leading Homeland, Priyanka Chopra leading the recently cancelled Quantico, Glenn Close (referenced in this very film) and Rose Byrne fronting the brilliant classic legal series Damages, the entire cast of Claws (returning next month), Cookie and Take Three girls in Empire and Star respectively and Viola Davis fronting the brilliant How to Get away with Murder.

Not including local Australian series showcasing brilliant women like the entire cast of Wentworth (returning next month, FINALLY), the cast of the slightly disappointing Picnic at Hanging Rock and all Australian commercial local dramas featuring Rebecca Gibney.

This film (as I wrote earlier) is not super funny, but a lot of fun, the appearance by Christina Aguilera and dance sequences/dress ups and can I just saw Jackie Weaver as McCarthy's mother, priceless!

I liked this, a lot, a lot more than I expected, 4 Stars, fun for all, important messages shared and positivity galore, YASS, Yass, YASS!!!

Movie Matinee Madness - Deadpool 2

Ryan Reynolds and Marvel are back with the R Rated (MA rated in Australia) anti superhero film, Deadpool 2.

Marvel are not 100% happy with controlling all screens, all sessions in Australia with the Avengers film, so it's the second superhero film for May 2018.

Whilst I have not seen the new Avengers film, I feel a little worn out with the comic book stars, after demolishing the fourth season of S.H.I.E.L.D. I feel I need a wee break. However Deadpool is no regular superhero affair, it has plenty of F bombs (and in this films case C bombs) plus the violence is off the hook, literally full metal racket off the hook.

Joining Ryan Reynolds is a cast of thousands this time around. Like X-Men and Avengers films, whats better than one superhero? Many superheros.

Josh Brolin plays Cable who isn't really a bad guy and NZ youngster Julian Dennison gets his international/big break as Firefist and their are cameos galore for the comic book tragics out there.

Now I loved Deadpool's original film, however this one for me was a bit much of a muchness. Also the avenging of a loved one is so Death Wish a few months ago.

Maybe I am getting old or just want something original on the big or small screen, but this was not the best superhero film I have seen of late. Black Panther was such a better more classy effort, also with better (original) music. Using Celine Dion and tragic old school hits is cute but done before.

I also saw Life of the Party which I had low to no exceptions almost right after so I am a little swayed with my reviews for the two films this weekend.

No one cares what I think or what other reviewers think, this film is going to be a hit, actually it already is. Taking in over 370 million thus far against a budget of 110 million.

Deadpool 2, a third is definitely coming, jumping on board the Marvel gravy train and a cinema complex near you. Also we don't have long till July, when Ant-Man and the Wasp will be coming to a cinema near you.

Deadpool is funny in parts and does pack a punch with some fun action scenes and fun it pokes at it's own genre so I am going to be generous and give it three F bomb Stars.

Star, Finale

Along with Empire, having the WORST crossover of the season (leave it to The CW and the DC series) this season we saw some new additions to the show, but lost a few folks along the way too, if you don't want any spoilers stop here and then return.

OK for those up to date after this week's explosive finale, where damn Brandy is a bad ass bitch! Shit! And lives were once again in the balance (again after saying farewell to Jahil Rivera (Benjamin Bratt) last week), strap yourself in this was up their with the Dynasty finale.

So this year the music got better, Star got sassy (well more sassy) and honestly I feel like this show deals with so many more current issues it's more likely to become a long remembered cult hit. Maybe even more than Cookie's glory days in Empire.

I have laid sass on Empire this season, however Star is lucky is only two seasons in and has not yet jumped the shark with visions of the dead. Yet.

Let's look/listen to some of the season 2 music before one last long wait until Season 3 commences (most likely September this year).

Strap yourselves in kids, I reckon season three is going to get lit! Yass! Who survives Miss Carlotta or Brandy playing Miss Cassie Brown? Who was on the plane? WTF!!!!

Empire, Finale

The finales are lining up left, right and centre over the last few weeks, we have had sudden deaths, fires, weddings, lives in the balances and musical dramas like Empire. I will shine the spotlight on the sister series Star tomorrow.

So Empire season four, what's happened? We have lost Xzibit as a regular (yep he gone), the Lyons boys have all struggled with romance with Hakeem still being rather popular with the ladies and Demi Moore and her daughter Rumer Willis have also both left.

We got to see Queen Latifah crossover in one of the worst TV crossovers with Star, Funkmaster Flex guest starred as himself and it looks like Taye Diggs might have finally left as he joins the new CW series All American.

The finale had all the drama of a regular episode with two departures. I mentioned one earlier but for a full SPOILER alert go HERE, it's a great recap on one of TV's most watched musical dramas.

The show has already been renewed for a fifth season (Star too has been renewed for a third outing) so it's onwards and upwards for the series.

Who will join season five? Where is Jamal off to? And what happens to Hakeem, Tiana and newcomer Blake? Lot's of questions which I am sure will be revealed in part one of the series in September this year. Yes the show has just wrapped but programmers will be looking for series return dates real soon.

Empire which generally (like the Walking Dead) airs in two blocks of nine episodes, one block before Christmas and one around later March. It's nice we get the series almost in two consecutive blocks of nine episodes. Unlike some other series which breaks every other week.

FOX has struggled this year ratings wise, so it's lucky Empire still has a fairly loyal following despite the storylines getting more and more random. Thank god for Cookie as she still steals every scene she is in and those outfits, SHIT!

Empire it's been real in 2017-2018, I eagerly await season five.

Westworld Season 2.

In 2016 when Westworld debuted on HBO back in late 2016, I never thought I would wait over a year for season two, however I did and man it was actually worth the wait! Here was my thoughts on the first season but now let's look midway through season two.

A tight and explosive start to the season has held steady with the ratings, but not yet hit the ratings highs of HBO favourite Game of Thrones.

I love a ten episode season, there is no room for filler episodes, there is no time to be a slow burner, it's a fast paced straight to the point futuristic Western action thriller.

Westworld has already been renewed (rightfully so) for a third season (and more importantly I can see future seasons coming to HBO) which will air eventually, well we wait around 18 months for the season outing. So, it could be 18 months or two years away, who knows?

This season is titled The Door whilst last season was dubbed The Maze, so where is the door? What is the door...

Westworld has extremely high production values, it's a critical favourite and over time I am sure it will be another HBO cult hit.

I am loving this season way more than the first season, it's super action packed and a lot of fun. My only compliant is there is less nudity. Season one however did probably did have the most full frontal nudity I have ever scene on a HBO series and that is saying something!

Westworld, on Foxtel no on Mondays, streaming and some live sessions.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (season 6), Looks to be the...

Last.

And it's being held till Summer (USA Summer, Aussie Winter) 2019. Not only this, it is believed in early reports the season will be roughly 13 episodes. Last time ABC did this to a show it got canned and banished to Fridays. Currently S.H.I.E.L.D. does air on Fridays and with no day/evening listed for the sixth series to screen, no doubt it will most likely be on Fridays again.

I am only up to the last few episodes of Season 4 and honestly it is an interesting show, it does get better as it goes on, Season 4 is more like 3 mini seasons within one. The Ghost Rider episodes at the start of the season are my favourite so far with the LMD ones a little random and for the final few Agents of Hydra is a little strange.

ABC has cancelled it's only other Marvel series Agent Carter a few seasons ago, and with FOX saying it's fifth and final Gotham time next season, something tells me US networks are starting to cull the long list of DC and Marvel series.

iZombie will also take a bow next season on The CW, however their schedule is jam packed with superheros and gay roles galore.

The action in S.H.I.E.L.D. is one of the best things about the show, making me feel, this is expensive and another reason I feel this will come to an end in 2019.

It's been a fun ride S.H.I.E.L.D. but please go off with a bang and not a whimper like poor old Agent Carter did.

(Mini) Sunday Spotlight: Christine and the Queens

Hailing from France, Christine and the Queens (AKA Héloïse Letissier) has released a killer new single (alongside Dam-Funk) on Friday and I hope this means a new record on the way.

With Tilted taking a while to make it here to Australia (originally released in 2014) I was instantly fond of this young French superstar.

So today (or tonight, sorry for the late post) let's head to France for a look into Christine & The Queens thus far.

Gotham returns for one last outing...

One of the long list of DC Comics series is coming to an end and we all saw it coming, Gotham the prequel to Batman is done and almost dusted.

No doubt it will be a more slim season (I expect less than 22 episodes in it's fifth and final season) and no return date is set yet. Maybe in will replace Empire or Star when it has it's halfway point break. But FOX has an uphill battle next TV season (2018-2019) other than Empire and Star and the best network new series this season 9-1-1, the talent is a bit lacking this coming season.

FOX farewells six shows and adds four new ones to their roster.

Gotham has been a bit up and down though this year, with no character ever dying, the Joker coming, going, having a twin brother, coming back bigger badder than ever and then the Penguin and the Riddler just going around and round in circles.

Catwoman AKA Selina Kyle at the end of the last episode also has her life in the balance. Will she see a run in Season Five?

Will Poison Ivy continue to age while the majority of the cast remain ageless?

I do have to applaud FOX for announcing it's final season, allowing viewers to know the end is in sight, the prequel is done, Batman lives on and we no longer have to deal with Batman and puberty.

Gotham will in a way be missed but overall it's starting to over stay it's welcome.

(Mini) Sunday Spotlight: Tove Styrke

On the Euro Vision weekend it's the perfect time to feature Swedish Idol runner up, Tove Styrke. Not to be confused with Disco Tits singer Tove Lo (also from Sweden), Tove Styrke released a mini "album" on May 4th, so it's time to take some of the choice cuts from the release in.

Happy Mother's Day, mothers around the globe, fur mothers, real mothers and even mothers of fabulous singer/songwriters.

Okay so without further ado, let's hook into some Swedish POP!

And in Other News... Your Favourite TV show might be...

Canceled.... or Renewed.

It's that time of the year when the US networks decide the fate of your favourite shows. Some last a long time, so only get that one season run.

Here is a list or highlights of last weeks renewals or cancellations.

As I watch this week's episode I learnt newly returned Quantico will conclude at the end of it's 13 week run. It started late this season, had it's episode order slashed from 22 episodes to just 13, so those should all have been signs. It was once a buzz show, now it's buried in a busy line up of finales, spin offs and new series trying to earn their stripes.

ABC (US) also canned former buzz worthy series Designated Survivor, screening locally on Netflix (Weekly) the series was a favourite last year, this year it's on the scrap heap. Next week ABC will unveil new shows and it's lineup with NBC launching the week Sunday/Monday and FOX, CBS, The CW and ABC to follow.

The Exorcist and Lucifer also have seen the end of their run on FOX, whilst NBC gave The Brave and Taken their matching orders.

The Expanse is now being shopped around streaming services as Syfy gave it the thumbs down.

Blindspot got a surprising renewal despite the fact it's ratings have slipped, the storyline is loco AF and it's buried away on Friday alongside cancelled movie to TV remake Taken. FOX renewed Empire a little while back and now they have given it's sister series Star another run. Star has really shined in series two, it's tackled big issues whilst still having some seriously hot musical performances. It might not have been around as long as Empire but it's kicking a lot more goals.

NBC also renewed all it's Chicago series, Fire, Med and PD and A.P. Bio.

The CW had good luck with Black Lightening in it's first year, however Valor and Life Sentence are history. The CW does not put on too many new shows, however that changes next year with them adding Sunday programming. Look out a Charmed reboot may be on the way and no doubt another DC comic book may even get up on the youth network.

There will be load more TV news next week.

Atlanta, just ended...

It's been a while since my season one post, but Atlanta (in Australia) over on the wonderful SBS On Demand just concluded.

SBS On Demand is currently smashing it with The Handmaids Tale continuing to shine and being renewed for a third season, and fast tracking from FX Atlanta. It's been a big week for Donald Glover, his music video for This is America has been a huge hit. He rose to number one on my Fresh Friday Countdown today.

The video has now been watched (as of right now) over 74 million times.

Not to Atlanta, it's been full of episodes which could be standalone shows, it's gone dark, it's gone rogue and it's been tough to watch at times this season.

Have I enjoyed it as much as last season? Quick answer, no. It's been hard to follow and before you know it an episodes end credits roll and you really wonder what you will get next week.

Now Donald has gone full SNL live and rose above his big Redbone era, Donald has yet delivered the news if season three will be made. It rates well (for FX) with On Demand viewing and with Donald the man of the moment right now I would say a third season may be on the way but pending Donald's schedule. No doubt he will tour and hopefully release a full length record this year.

Atlanta it's free and streaming the whole second season (titled Robbin') is up now on SBS On Demand. I'll leave you with my number one jam for the week and the news that it's time to go all Swedish on Sunday with a special Mini Sunday Spotlight, come back for a very Euro Vision weekend.

Picnic at Hanging Rock

Foxtel having a winning streak with TV dramas in Australia, except Picnic at Hanging Rock better pick up the pace because frankly it's a little dull.

With an all star cast and so much hype behind it, it was always going to be judged. The six part miniseries, is now up online at Foxtel Now (or whatever the budget Foxtel is called that Telstra gave me free for a year) and you can binge it all Netflix style.

Natalie Dormer, formally of Game of Thrones is the main draw card but it's the young girls from the Picnic who may leave the best impression on the viewers.

It's not getting rave reviews however the ambitious project is getting screened on Amazon in the US and BBC in the UK.

I am still waiting desperately next month for the return of Wentworth the jewel in the crown of the Foxtel drama line up. Great news is the series has already been renewed for a seventh season surely making it Foxtel's longest running local drama.

(Mini) Sunday Spotlight: Amy Shark

Gold Coast singer songwriter is now a household name in Australia, she rose to number one on my Fresh Friday Countdown with the Fourth strong in Ms Shark. Yes Friday was May the Fourth and as a slight Star Wars nerd, the force was strong in Shark.

She overtook Canadian superpowers Drake and The Weeknd for the big number one this week. Her debut album Love Monster is building and will finally land on July 13, 2 days before my birthday, what a gift.

Shark has won fans the world over via Spotify and Apple Music playlist additions with Adore doing big business. It rose to number on 2 on the Hottest 100 for 2016.

Her EP Night Thinker spawned Adore, Weekends and Drive You Mad, all big radio sing alongs. Not to mention Shark recently landed a spot alongside Khalid on the Love, Simon soundtrack. In an era soundtracks are a thing again, Shark is everywhere. I usually leave this blog for TV and Movies, however today I have already put the spotlight on the incredible Janelle Monae, so this is a double Sunday feature for females the Globe over, killing it right now, killing it!

Time to relieve some of Shark's best moments, Happy Sunday!

Dynasty (2017 TV series), Season 1, review II

We are now two episodes away from the big season finale and the good news is we get a second season. For a while there I thought this was easily a one season affair, however with Netflix screening the series worldwide, it got a life line.

Back in October (before it was thrown onto Friday's) I had this take on the first few episodes, now as we close in on the end of the season, where will it end and where will it pick up in the second season?

Rafael de la Fuente is the standout in my eyes, he is handsome and camp, whilst also being super sweet in some scenes. Eddie Britt (I mean Nicollette Sheridan) came in at the 11th hour and pushed the viewership a little higher, but more importantly raised the bitchiness.

Fallon Vs Cristal is fun to start but when they work together that is when the magic happens and as we cruise to (I'm guessing) a soapy cliffhanger, will they be friends or enemies as the curtain closes?

Netflix air the series in Australia whilst it airs on The CW in the US. The CW will add another few new series (hopefully getting a go on Netflix Down Under) maybe a Charmed reboot, they ditched the Sabrina the Teenage Witch series (however Netflix took the project over) and no doubt another DC series may join Black Lightening and the other DC series.

I can't wait to see the final couple of Dynasty episodes, we have reached the end of the 2017-2018 TV season for the USA, what treats will the 2018-2019 season delivery? Final cancellations and schedules are due to drop this month....
