Cinema Slut #2019 - Us

Jordan Peele is back! Super hyped film maker's follow up to Get Out is already smashing records in the US @ the box office and now it is set to do the same in Australia.

Horror takes many shapes and Jordan is ditching the bump in the night shit, adding some NWA, Janelle Monae and great pop culture references.

Us was not the most likely film one would choose to see at 10:20am on a Saturday morning, but damn I was glad I made my way over to Fox Studios.

I loved Get Out, and I loved this but not quite as much. I am in love with Lupita Nyong'o she just slays and there is one big fat twist I am not going to go into.

You need to go into this film knowing very little, cause it gets twisted AF!

Some films when you read too much and watch multiple trailers you get way too many spoilers, so watch or ignore the above trailer.

Us is honestly going to get people talking again about race but maybe class as well this time. Us could stand simply for us or the US (ofA). Who really knows.

This is a top notch film, very classy, a great cinema experience, 4 Stars.

Riverdale DOES Heathers

With it's musical episode behind them now, Riverdale is moving into the homeward stretch of episodes for it's long third season.

Heathers was the feature this year following Carrie the Musical last year (sense a theme) with some big performances and lot's of big fun!

I have a love/hate relationship with Riverdale and honestly this was the best episode in a while. It's been a tough/strange season, however they have done enough for a fourth outing, however the failed crossover with Sabrina was disappointing. Apparently though another Riverdale spin off is just around the corner.

Set to conclude mid May, we get one more episode this week before a wee break until around mid April. With another season already in the bag will we see a major cliffhanger this season? When will the Katy Keene crossover commence?

With a couple of big name The CW shows set to conclude next year (Arrow and Supernatural) this leaves Katy Keene a good chance to get picked up. I also think Arrow/The Flash/Supergirl spin off Batwoman fronted by Ruby Rose may be a shoe in.

So how were the Heathers performances? Judge for yourself below or stream the episode (in Australia) on Netflix, it along with all of seasons 1-3 are currently there for your pre winter binge!

Cinema Slut #2019 - Swimming with Men

Rob Brydon from Gavin & Stacey fame stars as the lead in this rather depressing, older white man problems film. I can say that as I am almost 37, white (yes I may be gay but other than that) I have a feeling these men made getting old as a white man look god awful.

Excluding Adeel Akhtar who ticks the ethnic and gay box, this film and the session I saw got limited if any laughs. My first gut reaction was this film looks awful, a second look at the trailer and the appealing hour of an 9:50am screening made me think twice. I shouldn't have.

There were some moments where this film almost turned a corner, however they were few and far between.

It honestly was a bit of a dull affair. Reviews online weren't too positive and even at only 96 minutes it felt a little over long.

After a dull intro and peek into Rob Brydon, Eric Scott's life and man did it suck. Accounting, a weird relationship with his wife and even stranger relationship with his son.

Not much worked on this film but I am all for older people finding a passion other than listening to Alan Jones and voting for his mate Mark Latham in One Nation.

Oh where is the world going, this gets a lone 2 Stars.

Cinema Slut #2019 - Destroyer

Nicole Kidman is on a roll, Big Little Lies in TV land, amazing, Lion, local, amazing true (based on) story, brilliant, Aquaman in the blockbuster/comic book sphere sensational and Boy Erased, touching and excellent.

Destroyer continues Nicole's new era, she is unrecognisable and delivers and award winning (almost) performance.

Destroyer is dark, twisted and rough AF. I loved this new direction for Nicole and she works on this film with fantastic female director Karyn Kusama.

The pacing at times and near the end is very slow, however I was 100% along for the ride. I am so excited to see more Kidman in the upcoming second season of Big Little Lies, however for now, this is screening and it's excellent.

For a cinema experience you won't forget in a while, Destroyer is on now and gets a solid 3.5 Stars

Bad Mothers

Channel Nine isn't having much luck with drama's lately, Bite Club (probably not coming back), Doctor Doctor (woeful, first episode was a massive turn off), Hyde & Seek was decent but short lived and a reboot of SeaChange and Halifax FP is coming back as Halifax - Retribution.

So how does Bad Mothers rate? Well with MAFS as a lead it, it should be smashing it, but it's audience dropped from just under 700K viewers with episode one to just under 500K this week.

Wrapping up before Easter we have three more episodes of this series to find out who killed Charlotte.

Spoiler alert if you haven't seen any of the series yet, Melissa George dies episode one! Yes episode one!

Dan Hany and Daniel McPherson try their best as two of the husbands to these Bad Mothers, whilst with Melissa George out of the way Tess Haubrich, Jessica Tovey, Mandy McElhinney AKA Rhonda and Shalom Brune-Franklin round up the Bad Mothers.

This show is nowhere near the top shelf Aussie drama like Secret City or Wentworth, it also plays a lot like Playing for Keeps (surprisingly coming back for a second season on the troubled Ten network) with a murder mystery that is actually not that interesting.

Honestly both Playing for Keeps and Bad Mothers didn't need murder to create more interest they needed better scripts.

This show is easy to watch trash why you do your fourth load of washing for the week when it's only Tuesday.

Bad Mothers, screens on Channel Nine.

Now Apocalypse

STARZ has a sexy new gay series and it is called Now Apocalypse. Only two episodes in and it's hella fun and sexy as hell.

I won't talk too much about this show currently screening on STAN in Australia, as it's only two episodes in, it is full of hot bodies (both sexes) and lot's of man on man, lady on man action.

Now Apocalypse is also a bit quirky so it is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but honestly give it a go.

I will look at a number of new series as a few new shows have landed on my radar!

This Sunday come back for some Huntly on the (Mini) Sunday Profile and I have a pile of movies I want to see, so keep visiting a few reviews on the way!

(Mini) Sunday Spotlight: RY X

His known to family and friends as Ry Cuming but to the world he is RY X.

Hailing from Angourie on the far north of NSW, RY X was recently a Double J feature Album and to be honest I was to familiar with him until then. RY X has a Chet Faker/Angus Stone style, and to be honest it's perfect for a wet Sunday.

RY X has a number of a music videos already under his belt so like me why not discover your favourite new artist now.

Cinema Slut #2019 - Hotel Mumbai

Will keep this review short, not only cause I'm short on time, but this film is just awesome. Unfortunately I saw it the day after the terrors of what unfolded in New Zealand, however this is a tale that needed to be told and it was told so well and the acting was beyond perfect.

Dev Patel has always been excellent, but hot damn give the boy some awards and cred for this amazing part.

This Australian/US/Indian co production is so well done that I believe for the coming AACTA Awards this should clean sweep the categories.

The production looks a million bucks, all the cast are sensational from the terrorists to the victims. This was an awful day for Mumbai in 2008 and my thoughts are with anyone effected. Not just in Mumbai but any terror events worldwide, from yesterday to the many mass shootings in the US to Port Arthur more locally.

Hotel Mumbai is outstanding, 4.75 Stars. So near perfect.

Brilliant NEW Australian Drama

Secret City and The Heights have something in common, they both feature Marcus Graham. Yes true but they are both EXCELLENT.

The Heights and Secret City both offered viewers the option to binge all episodes on catch up platforms OR watch week to week. Unfortunately this gives a false indication when you look at overnight ratings to gauge the shows popularity but at least the platform reporting is maybe/well 100% more accurate than ratings.

Secret City started back in 2016 and had a long absence on our screens, however in 2019 it's back with another six episode season. The Heights on the other hand is a new series featured on the ABC and looks at Neighbours and Home and Away and says, you can have gay weddings and the occasional diverse character, but we are going to tick EVERY box.

A Vietnamese gay prac teacher, a tradie from Iran, a single mother with a child with a disability, a couple of main and semi regular aboriginal characters and that is just for starters.

However the show is real, raw and so well done. Having a half an hour well done Australian 30 minute drama (not comedy like Upper Middle Bogan, Rosehaven, Utopia etc) serves the ABC well.

Mystery Road was a huge hit last year, The Cry received a bit of attention this year and no doubt Glitch and Harrow will be popular upon their return later.

Foxtel on the other-hand houses the exceptional Wentworth and apparently has a load more drama on the way.

Picnic at Hanging Rock sort of did not live up to it's expectations but I have hope for it's next drama venture.

Wentworth I have high hopes for the next season after season six was a little disappointing.

So for some pre Winter viewing on the binge, The Heights on ABC iView and over on Foxtel Go/Now or whatever is streaming all six episodes of Secret City now.

Cinema Slut #2019 - Captain Marvel

Following IWD yesterday, Captain Marvel could not choose a better date for release. Brie Larson is an outstanding actress, this was clear after the 2015 film Room, so how does she go as the first female lead in a Marvel film?

Well Wonder Woman broke the glass ceiling a few years back and did an amazing job, Wonder Woman was hella good, Captain Marvel starts slow and weird but with a 90's throwback and sensational cast it gets better and better as the film goes on.

I really enjoyed this film, Brie Larson as the Captain, Samuel L Jackson as Fury, Jude Law, Annette Bening, Lashana Lynch and Aussie Ben Mendelsohn round off a near perfect cast.

The 90's music and pop culture references, the NIN t-shirt won for a large chunk of the film by Larson and again the music, TLC, Hole, No Doubt, Garbage and more.

The action sequences are fierce, the film once it gets past it's erratic start goes into hyperdrive.

I was completely engrossed in this Marvel picture, much like Black Panther it felt like they were going somewhere new. Long gone are the simple Thor, Iron Man films, there is depth, there is real life political issues explored and the moral Marvel compass is in full swing.

What better day to wrap up IWD with a film like this. If anyone thought this would fail, think again Captain Marvel was a super fun ride that celebrated a great decade, the 90's.

No spoiler alerts about the plot but this did excite me for the upcoming season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fun stuff, 4 Stars.

Kylie | Live, 2019

Over on Flashing off the Record this week I announced my first Album of the Year Nomination for 2019, it was the Hilltop Hoods and their wonderful latest record The Great Expanse. This week I also saw my first live concert for 2019, Ms Kylie Minogue.

I will admit unlike The Great Expanse for the Hilltop Hoods, Kylie's latest album Golden has not been as well received as previous records. However most Kylie fans go to Kylie concerts for hits from yester-years.

This years set list for the Golden tour was truly diverse. It was fun, appealing to the very diverse crowd and seriously entertaining.

Kylie has always been a Showgirl but this was a more humble return home for the pop princess. Kylie's latest album took a country turn, her fans were not really on board for the new turn, however with hits in the opening half like Better the Devil You Know, In Your Eyes and Confide in Me the crowd really got behind our local pop princess.

She moved into Wow and a different take on the worldwide smash Can't Get You Outta My Head and then a brilliant take on Slow. Honestly one of my favourite Kylie songs of all time, for some reason I just love Slow and cannot get enough of it.

Wouldn't Change a Thing and Especially for You gave the room a nice dose of nostalgia whilst the Studio 54 element of the show was outstanding, On a Night Like This, Spinning Around and The Loco-Motion were all awesome, a big glitter bomb during Raining Glitter was pure camp!

The encore of Love at First Sight and Dancing just made me smile, ear to ear.

Kylie was back, Dancing is not as bad as the first time I heard it, but still I do love my old Kylie and wish just once she would entertain me with Indie Kylie from her Impossible Princess days.

Thanks Kylie for a sensational night!

Cinema Slut #2019 - Greta

This movie is hella bat shit crazy! It's insane but a hell of a lot of fun. Both leads Huppert and Moretz are sensational.

The film clicks in at under one and a half hours which is great as the pace is full throttle.

The movie starts off with a bit of character building and then it goes full metal Misery with Isabelle Huppert is exceptional as lead Greta.

Chloe Grace Moretz is an exceptional young actor and from her early days in Kickass, she has really come a long way.

This movie will not be for everyone however it's an exceptional little psychological thriller with a big finale and some jump out of the seat moments.

If you are looking for a fun, well acted film this weekend (or mid week) this could be for you, 3.5 Stars.

Cinema Slut #2019 - King of Thieves

The Hatton Garden Safe deposit burglary is the true life inspiration for King of Thieves, this matinee ready film with seasoned actors seemingly having a load of fun. Oh and they take Daredevil, I mean Charlie Cox along for the ride too for good measure.

King of Thieves is packed with loads of bad language and funny old people stuff.

It's an interesting ride and I mostly enjoyed the ride. Michael Caine is a true legend and the other duds are all awesome too.

I was not expecting much and after The Blonde One during the week my expectations for my next film were LOW! I did however want to see Greta over this film, so I was happy that my next film review will be Greta and I saw it Sunday afternoon.

But back to King of Thieves and the worst part of this film was the super abrupt ending. It just kinda stops, has some text about the real life folk who were at the centre of the Hatton Garden Safe deposit burglary.

This has been done before, however I have not seen another version, so this was fresh for me. So I enjoyed this true crime tale featuring a bunch of fab seniors, 3 Stars.

(Mini) Sunday Spotlight: Mansionair

Jack, Lachlan and Alex make up Mansionair. Forming in 2014, their debut Shadowboxer has been a long time coming.

Hailing from Sydney, two EP's down, five singles and two features on singles from the likes of Odesza and Manila Kila.

What better day than to feature a Sydney band than after the annual Sydney Mardi Gras. This is a chilled record as well as the feature from Triple J this week, perfect listening for those sore heads today. Out Friday this album is an instant 2019 classic.

Next week, Stella Donnelly from Perth featured right here!

Cinema Slut #2019 - The Blonde One

Happy Mardi Gras readers, it's that time of the year where glitter sells out across the city and the parade brings millions of tourist dollars into town whilst the lockout laws are on hold for one night only.

So the Mardi Gras film festival is on and a World premier aired throughout the week. The Blonde One, directed and written by Marco Berger The Blonde One is his latest film.

Like the Mardi Gras film I saw the year before, the tension built for the first half of the film, then it was just sex for days and days.

Like a lot of gay films that have come before The Blonde One, there is no new ground here. Boy meets Boy, Boy sleeps with Girls but teases Boy, Boys eventually hook up, one Boy gets his heartbroken.

End of plot.

Except for this film, the long starring longingly into each others eyes and tension is interesting for a while but grows tired when the blonde one (Gaston Re) literally speaks around 4 lines in the first half hour.

His redeeming feature is the time he spends with his young daughter. Confusing, yes well he was married young and had a daughter, so both gays actually like girls, it's based in Buenos Aires and sexuality seems a lot more free and liberal than Australia.

This film was not much fun, if I want nudity I'll watch porn over this any day. It has some good moments and listening to the Q&A there is definitely and audience for this and I was in the minority disliking the film. However in 2019, you need to reach an audience, a wide, diverse audience and this will not reach that.

2 Stars.
