Super Producers Part Two - Flume

It's been ages since Part One "Calvin Harris", well early June 2012, so it's high time for part two and who else better than Harley Streten, who? You ask.... It's the amazing Flume!

He is only 20 years old and super producer Flume got his first taste for producing at age 13 from the most unlikely of places - a music production program he found in a cereal box. Flume has done some killer remixes and his debut self titled album (along with part one's super producer Calvin Harris) was nominated for this Blog's album of the year. I have decided to announce the Australian album of the year on Monday 28 Jan 2013 (Aust Day Public Holiday) so tune on in to see if Flume had the goods to be numero uno.

His track "Holdin On'" was a massive smash in 2012 and his remix of Hermitude's "Hyperparadise" was just supreme. He also got loads of guests to appear on his debut including and not limited to Chet Faker, Moon Holiday and Jezzabell Doran. My favourite collob however was T-Shirt on the epic tune "On Top".

Amazing or what?

Australian music is looking in mighty fine shape with artists like this releasing such epic debuts and at such young ages. So 2013 will be a huge year for Flume and I can totally see this being a big release overseas (namely in the UK) so Goyte watch yo back mate. The album has also recently been certified gold which in the era of music piracy that's not half bad.

Okay so here's another taste of his epic work below with DJ Anna Lunoe:

Until next time, Super Producers out!

@ the Movies 2012 - Quartet

It's the The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel take 2, with Maggie Smith playing an old bitch again and old people generally getting old and being a little bit down on life.  But then again this movie was ultra cute and the oldies in the cinema I was in loved it sick.

Also if your into Opera and classical music the cast is really going to impress you.

Billy Connolly provided some good comic relief while the character of Cecily "Cissy" played by Pauline Collins was just delicious.  This movie made me smile ear to ear and towards the end just think how great life is and it's little crazy moments.

If you are in the mood for a feel good movie and a decent film in this rather bleak summer of films catch "Quartet" if you love oldies weeing in public, swearing and generally playing up this will make you smile like a goose, like me.

Quartet is a well acted and fun film rating an operatic 4 stars.

Album of the year for 2012 & the winner is......

Wow last year's winner Goyte went onto have a HUGE 2012, so how will the 2012 winner go in 2013? It's been a long road to get here, it's been 6 nominations, a few close call almost, maybe nominations (yes that's you Lana Del Ray and your Paradise Edition) but now it's the moment the world and my blog has been waiting for this BIG album of the year.

From Missy Higgins to Flume and down to SA for some Hilltop Hoods Australia was well represented and on Australia Day I will reveal the top Aussie album of 2012. So for now that leaves the three international albums up for the big 2012 award. Calvin Harris had the highest number of successful singles from one album, The xx were the most chilled but the year does belong to one Frank Ocean.

The release of his Channel Orange has been groundbreaking for hip hop, not only for the super fine music but the fact Frank Ocean had a crush, on a boy.
Go Frank, from the 10 minute opus of "Pyramids" to the smooth jams of "Forrest Gump" & "Crack Rock", this album was hardly ever far from my IPOD. The album was sublime and tracks like "Lost" are on every ones lips and top 10 countdowns for the year ending.

Frank Ocean has a very bright future and I can't wait to hear what his second release will bring us. Channel Orange is this years very special album of the year and for the first time on Australia Day, I will crown an Australian Album of the year from the below:

The Hilltop Hoods - Drinking from the Sun
Missy Higgins - The Ol Razzle Dazzle
Flume - Self Titled

So stay tuned.

In the meantime here is some silky smooth Frank Ocean for y'all.

Happy Holidays!

And just in time for this announcement Frank has dropped a new gem, what do you reckon???

@ the Movies 2012 - BEST OF..... + Trouble with the Curve

So first up the best fo 2012, here we go again:

BEST hyped film of 2012 - The Dark Knight Rises

BEST jump out of the seat film - Paranormal Activity 4 (3 YEARS RUNNING PARANORMAL!)

BEST Teen drama/coming of age/comedy blah - Perks of Being a Wallflower

BEST low budget film - Project X

BEST NZ/small film - Intouchables (Not Kiwi but Bonjour, so Frenchy so Chic!)

BEST 3D movie - The Amazing Spiderman, but this was actually in 4D in the lovely Bangkok!

BEST Aussie Movie - The Sapphires

BEST Music film - Rock of Ages/The Sapphires (tie)

BEST controversial film of 2012 - The Dictator

BEST Drama - End of Watch

BEST musical on the big screen - The Sapphires/Pitch Perfect (it's kinda like Glee in a movie format) (tie)

Now to the Christmas spirit of family in the great sporting drama "Trouble with the Curve".

Such a fab end of year film which I was lucky to catch pre no further screenings to make way for family friendly crap.  Clint Eastwood was back to his Gran Torino best acting and producing this wonderful father/daughter tale.

Amy Adams is equally wonderful and Justin Timberlake is making real great acting choices by choosing great roles and like some men he is only getting better looking.  Remember how foul he looked when he dated Britney???

The supporting cast is also really awesome, John Goodman is great while Matthew Lillard (remember him from scream???) is great as a real creep.

This is one of those movies you sit down and just enjoy it's such easy viewing, all actors are great and own their roles and the story is touching and interesting (despite my quick pee break - damn coffee going right through me!) keeping your attention for the near two hour running time.

Trouble with the Curve has no troubles and is a real end of year gem, 4 stars.

JT now:

JT Before:

Me knows which one I would prefer to sit on my face.  And with that thought Merry Christmas all and all the very best for 2013.  Thanks for reading in 2012 and look out for the album of the year announce tomorrow and my hottest 100 list for 2012.  It's gonna be HUGE! Laters.....

Album of the Year Nomination #6 - FLUME - Flume

Good on you Flume, from Sydney and bringing us an awesome electronic album for 2012 and the final album of the year nomination for 2012. This takes us to 6 big nominations, 3 Aussies and 3 internationals. The winner will be unveiled on Boxing Day and I am so up in the air as to who will take the big award.

Flume has really risen and risen from his Triple J Unearthed beginnings to big tours, to “Holdin On” being a big radio smash. “Sleepless” was where we first heard his production skills and the guests lined up for his debut album Chet Faker, Moon Holiday and Jezzabell Doran & George Maple. My highlights from the album “Sintra” is definitely a killer opener, “Holdin On” the single amazing, “On Top” so awesome with a rap by T Shirt & “Sleepless” so EPIC!

Hope you have been enjoying Flume’s debut as much as I have since its release on the 9th of November, it’s been on my IPOD on a very regular basis. And BTW he is like only 20 and just super talent, am I jealous much, hell to the yes!

A big sorry to the below albums that missed the cut for a nomination this year and a brief reason why:

Tame Impala – Lonerism, WHY – I probably have not been smoking enough

The Presets – Pacifica, WHY – one word “Ghosts” WTF???

Lana Del Ray – Born to Die, WHY – Oh so close but the drama, the SNL performance, the whole first album cover up, not a winner in my book.

he Temper Trap – Self Titled, WHY – The second album is said to be difficult and this is proof of that.

Mumford & Sons – Babel, WHY – This one trick pony needs some new tricks, fast...

Pink – The Truth About Love, WHY – The truth is Pink, your RnB days were way better than this lame pop rock rubbish, sorry honey you may be able to put on an ace live show but by the looks of the sales for the recent album your fan base is even getting bored.

It's Finally Summer, but why is the water @ North Bondi FREEZING??? Countdown - Sun 23 Dec 2012

20 - Of Monsters & Men - Mountain Sound

19 - Flume - Holdin On'

2012 is almost O-V-A-H - Over in non Kath & Kimdrella speak

Yes it's almost done for another year!  So let's take a look at these two killer "Pop" mash ups for the year in music that was:

I like the first one better but that's just me and it's slightly longer too including even a few Aussies, Goyte & the talented Ms Sia Furler who is rumoured (according to the Sunday Telegraph) to have another album out in 2013!

Also the year in music gets a huge countdown special on Australia Day (Sat 26 Jan 2013) with Triple J and the annual Hottest 100.  So make sure you jump along and make your vote count:

I voted in triple j's Hottest 100 2012, have YOU?

Can't wait for the Hottest 100, well on Boxing Day I will post the years biggest songs all the way from 100-1 in my little old opinion.  I currently strongly believe these are the contenders for the Hottest 100 top spot:

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Featuring Wanz - Thrift Shop
Tame Imapala – Feels Like We Only Go Backwards
Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks
Mumford & Sons – I Will Wait
Tame Impala - Elephant

Yes I think the Triple J darlings Tame Impala stand a HUGE chance to claiming not only the J Award (two albums running) but the top spot in Australia's if not the worlds biggest musical countdown voted by real music fans.

Tune in tomorrow early AM for the week's biggest 20 and the number one may even have been mentioned in this very blog entry, also the 6th and final album of the year nomination before the announcement on Wednesday.

See y'all then!

Legally Blonde @ The Star

So I have waited a while to get tickets to one of Sydney's big musicals running @ present, but like all things patience always wins (if only my patience could handle the long wait between Avalanches records) and Legally Blonde is the total real thing.

I was so happy with this show at the 1pm matinee today.  When I think good musicals I think they have to be over the top and super camp or a true Miss Saigon style tragedy.  Legally Blonde is totally camp in every way, the songs, the pink, the male cast and the fab Lucy Durack.

Rob Mills and David Harris are good as her love interests and so nice to see Cameron Daddo back on the scene.  The supporting cast (including "I Will Survive" winner Michael Snell) are all really awesome with great dancing, singing and some nice acting in the campest show around.

This show will do well as it travels around the place as I really do believe with shootings all over the US, dumb fuck radio stations playing ridiculous pranks on people & Tony Abbott appealing to less than 50% of Australia you need a laugh you need some good old pink fun.

So go ahead and get some Christmas/Holiday cheer below:

All I can also say is thank you to Gordon Frost for some good casting too, at least that old c%&t Alan Jones didn't make this musical as for real he ruined Annie for me.  Give me a Daddo any day over that poor old racist closet case.

So to it's star rating, drum roll please it's a big 4.5 truly legal and blonde glitter stars with a sprinkle of pink shit.

Thanks for some early Christmas cheer and a musical actually campier than Priscilla!

Enemy of Average PART ONE - Ministry Of Sound The Annual 2013

I used to rush out to my local HMV in my younger dancing years and hop straight to buying the years annual compilation.  Now things have changed (and not for the better) this years annual (pictured below) is my first target in my new series "Enemy of Average".

In the old days these compilations featured cutting edge new songs, dance floor fillers and now, well let's run through some of this (2013's) years selections:

Rita Ora feat. Tinie Tempah - RIP (Gregor Salto Remix) - This woman was a very average judge on the UK X Factor this year and her average persona shines through on this really ordinary song that even in remix form is still horrid.

Far East Movement feat. Cover Drive - Turn Up The Love - This compilation used to feature the cream of the crop top 40 dance and this is nowhere near cream nor crop, it's a word similar to crop, CRAP!

Will.i.am feat. Eva Simons - This Is Love (Afrojack Remix) - This is Will.i.am at his worst, it's also old and his new tune "Scream & Shout" featuring that killer Britney line in it.  At least that would have been a current selection, on that note Florence's "Sweet Nothing" is left high and dry for the over played "Spectrum" remix by Calvin Harris.  Example's lazy effort "Say Nothing" is a very ordinary addition as is the Presets worst effort "Ghosts", god that song is horrible.

On the other hand Ministry Of Sound's Chillout Sessions Xv is spectacular, for any true music fans this is a must it's truly sublime.

So someone @ Ministry Of Sound has an ear for good tunes it's just a shame the annual has really gone down hill over the years.

So on that note let's listen to some classic dance songs that have withstood the test of time:

That's it for now, see you again over the weekend, it's Legally Blonde tomorrow and hopefully a film or two before Christmas!

@ the Movies 2012 - The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I do love a coming of age film, especially when it's realistic and looks at a lot of different aspects of growing up and those horrid growing pains.  Yes we all had some growing pains, even if you were in that popular group.

So the main cast are really good and the supporting older cast including the always charming Paul Rudd are ace.  Dylan McDermott is also great as the main (Charlie's) dad.

This is a great pre Christmas film as there is so much crap out there at present, my goodness, I know I am getting old when I look at the current now showing and roll my eyes multiple times.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower also lives in 90's world and does it oh so well, I love the 90's and the indie hits that are featured in this film are so fine.  I had a few moments where I felt tears coming on as Charlie was just such a great character.  I find coming of age movies do such a bad job sometimes and seeing a great drama last night it shows there is still amazing films to be made.

So for it's rating, 4 big wallflower stars, well done.  Now for some Christmas cheer as we head into the final lead up to Christmas:

@ the Movies - The Man with the Iron Fists

What a great looking cast first up (with the exception of Russell Crowe though) and what great action choreography, I mean this had some EPIC action sequences that just looked so gosh damn amazing!

RZA (the rapper) wrote and directed this summer masterpiece!  I loved every minute of this adventure ride, the settings were great the story was bad but so nice and simple to follow and check out the below eye candy.

There really was something for everyone in the eye candy department.

RZA did a good job with this film, I mean it paid homage to classic films and also brought the US to China, nice.

Really if you don't mind violence, a bit of a look into a whore house and a tiny bit of language this really does stack up to be a pretty fun day/night @ the movies.

The Man with the Iron Fists rates a highly positive 4 stars.

Also tomorrow it is only one week from the 100 most amazing and ground breaking songs of 2012.  What will be number one?  Could it be this:

@ the Movies 2012 - Skyfall {IMAX}

Receiving rave reviews everywhere you look Daniel Craig as Bond can seemingly do no wrong. Also featured is a very exciting Adele number which has been a very big hit for her and keeping her in the musical limelight of 2012.

It's been a big year for action, the Christopher Nolan Batman reboot finishing up, Looper & the Expendables Two. So with all those films before it, Skyfall actually does really well, the opening sequence is killer and then the movie is just dreamy as to watch.

Through all the amazing locations and all the interesting scenarios Bond gets it to it all just builds well and actually works as a really good thriller film.

The bad guy reminds me of Heath Ledger's Joker role in the Dark Knight and is equally as good.

If you like action/blockbuster films, this is definitely one for you it's terrific.

Looking forward to seeing where the next Bond film goes but for now Skyfall, the perfect school holiday film, the perfect slack summer film, it rates 4 action filled stars from London to Macau.

Song O the Day #50 {THE BAMBOOS - I Got Burned {Ft. Tim Rogers}}

The finale of Song O the Day finishes with an Aussie icon teaming up with the killer group The Bamboos. Yes it's the Tim Rogers featured tune "I Got Burned".

This song has featured on telly shows and been a nice little radio hit in 2012, so it definitely deserves to be featured as my farewell song of the day.

So let's check out the vision and the amazing sounds below:

The BIG 100 list of the year's anthems coming so very soon!

Monday, December 10, 2012

Like bookstores I am finding it ever more likely that Commerical Radio is on the way out.

Yes I have been silent long enough, the 2Day FM scandal has been HUGE, we pissed off the mother country with an prank that no one at the station may have the outcomes that have since come about.

Yes 2Day FM is no stranger to controversy with their delightful larger bride who presents Breakfast alongside the dreamy yet highly dense Jackie O.

In 2012 it has been a shocking year for commercial radio with Alan Jones being caught with his pants down (again and this time not in a male public toilet George Michael style) and Kyle earning the new nickname Vile Kyle. However after weighing in around 130KG I still prefer fat c%$t.

With almost everyone in Sydney and beyond now in possession in some form of smartphone loaded with loads of (illegally downloaded or legal from the over priced Apple store) music. Most iPhones, iPods can store days maybe even weeks of great music that you the listener can tune into at your own pace.

For me listening to Alpine then Azealia Banks followed by some Icona Pop without mindless chat, celebrity gossip (usually unreasearched and full of speculation) and then we come to the advertisements.

In 2012 we are saturated with advertising so when enjoying music do you really want to hear about the latest deals at Harvey Norman or what's going down @ Coles?

I think as technology has changed, people have moved on and online radio and smartphones are the new kings, your Southern Cross radio's and 2GB's need to releaise content is king and when your content is aimed at the morally bankrupt and mentally challenged your fighting an uphill battle. Not only does 2Day FM's playlist smell like the fish markets on a hot summer's day (maybe some lesbians may be turned on at this point, but each to yo own) but their presenters appear to becoming more and more bogan.

It's sad to say but one of my loves (radio) is dying off, music lives but it has some many other avenues now and your 2Day FM's, your Nova (sounds similar) and Smooth FM's have really been left on the wayside along with Darrell Lea, Dymocks & now Fitness First's. It is now the non ratings period and I have a funny feeling Kyle & Jackie O will be returning to a luke warm reception.

I would like to finish off by saying thank god in Australia we are blessed with the ABC and given an alternative to the mundane and very average commercial radio landscape. Thank you JJJ for making no prank calls today, playing local music, having outstanding announcers and having news on the hour every hour.

To the two who remain nameless, I watched you on ACA (god help me) and you disgusted me, it's a lesson for everyone, think about your actions and the consequences that may happen, if only Tony Abbott and Christopher Pyne believed in this simple but true statement.

R.I.P Jacintha Saldanha

2Day FM enough is enough, 14 year old girls on lie detectors, sexist remarks and now prank calls, come on, fair go either replace your current vile programs with intelligent programming or maybe in future think about the lives you so often ruin.

Song O the Day #49 {AZEALIA BANKS - 1991}

From my EP of the year comes another golden tune it's Ms Banks with "1991" a killer jam with a nasty ass beat and oh so much soul. Azealia's album set for 2013 is going to be seriously worth the wait, she has released so much gold in 2012 and I can't wait to hear new music from her.

In the meantime let's check out 1991 a killer tune that has helped shaped 2012:

What a way to start y'all Monday, big beats and bad words, see you tomorrow for the finale of Song O the Day!

Homebake 2012 - Sat 8 Dec 2012

So it was a beautiful summer day in Sydney yesterday as I walked my way across town in one of the most interesting and diverse cities I have been to and now lucky to call home, I listened to tunes on my smartphone that would have made the ultimate festival.  I then arrived at Homebake.

To say my response to Blondie as the lacklustre headliner and the line up in general has been a little negative, it seems to organizers missed the point and missed out on getting the below outstanding Australian acts for 2012:

Missy Higgins
The Temper Trap
360
Lisa Mitchell
Flume
Sarah Blasko
The Rubens
Oh Mercy
Urthboy
The Presets
Bertie Blackman
Flight Facilities

So with that little list I almost thought off the top of my head in 5 minutes I think it was fair to say Homebake 2012 was missing several fantastic acts that shaped the Australian musical landscape in 2012.

The lack of dance acts and high energy acts was a concern at the end of the night as the venue cleared out with strange choices like Tim Minchin on stage doing whatever it is that he does.

So now to the acts I saw and the first being one of the only dance acts it was reformed SONIC ANIMATION who kinda showed that their style really actually may belong left in the 90's.  They played a lot of the hits from their previous albums and one new song which was so so.

Next up was one of the cutest acts for the day, LAST DINOSAURS out of the mighty Brisbane, they have also had a great year so it was good to see them included in the line up.  They played lot's of hits from their debut including "Honolulu", "Andy" and others, the highlight however was their mash up cover of Lady (Hear Me Tonight) & Groovejet (If this Ain't Love).  What a 90's dance moment on the indie Homebake main stage.

Then came my clear highlight for the day HERMITUDE from across the M4 with lot's of bangers from their "Hyperparadise" release.  "Speak of the Devil" with guest dancer was just ace.  This was going to be hard to beat and sadly only at 6:30pm this was to be the best bit of Homebake and the last time I was to get my dance on.

We drifted over to the Dome for some SOMETHING FOR KATE and I pounded the question like Sonic Animation should they have stayed in the 90's?  Their new album needs to have a full listen to from me (maybe tomorrow) before I make up my mind, their set was littered with past hits and memories.

After Something for Kate some of my party decided to call it a night, I decided to give DANIEL MERRIWEATHER a go and it was only halfway through set I then called it a night.  Not that Daniel Merriweather was bad it was just not the vibe you wanted at that time of the evening, I could have been peaking to the sounds of the Presets, or Aston Shuffle from the nations capital, really anything other than poor Daniel playing to around 200 punters wondering where Homebake 2012 went oh so wrong.

Anyway Hermitude were the winners for this year for me, great live set, great energy and I heart their efforts in 2012!

Homebake 2012, please get a better line up next year and have a look around at what Aussies are making it big and give a random 80's international act a miss.

Thanks, 3 just passing, kinda lacklustre stars.

Song O the Day #48 {KIMBRA - With My Hands}

After her performance @ Homebake yesterday it's time to shine the spotlight on ARIA Award winning female of the year Kimbra. It's been a massive couple of years for Kimbra, her album "Vows" has been huge, her collab single "Warrior" for the Converse campaign was one of the coolest songs from the first 6 months of 2012.

Kimbra is simply blissful and thank goodness she calls Melbourne home now. With a promise to write new material next year this was just a sample of where the darling headed from a kids movie soundtrack, random!  The soundtrack if you're looking for it is Frankenweenie

Happy Sunday and Christmas now is oh so merry close!

Song O the Day #47 {OWL EYES - Crystallised}

Wow until I wikipedia'd her I never knew Owl Eyes AKA Brooke Addamo was on the 6th series of Australian Idol back in 2008. So this is my second Idol Song O the Day this week!

So Owl Eyes has released a string of singles, Raiders, Love Run Dry & appeared on the poor mans 360 "Boys Like You" Illy's own "It Can Wait".

This is her strongest single to date "Crystallised" is a fine piece of pop fun with BIG vocals and great production work:

Tomorrow we head across the pond or maybe to Melbourne who knows where this chick calls home now, however all I know is that she will be at Homebake today!

Song O the Day #46 {URTHBOY - Knee Length Socks}

Singing about Sydney's cesspit that is Kings Cross, yes I remember my days of being young and hanging out there but now it's just plain wrong town but Urthboy's song is great and catchy!

Urthboy has really showed he can work away from the Herd and put out some damn fine solo tracks and albums. His album from this year has been critically acclaimed and he teamed up with the amazing Daniel Merriweather on the
ace lead single.

So let's take a listen to where Urthboy is at with Knee Length Socks:

Only a couple more songs of the day so tune in tomorrow, also the top ladies on the year revealed in my top 20 ladies of 2012 coming soon....

Song O the Day #45 {LISA MITCHELL - Bless This Mess}

Oh what a pleasure it is to hear Ms Lisa Mitchell on the radio and I was lucky enough to see her on a double bill with the killer Alpine in 2012.

Lisa Mitchell's second album has been a grower and the second single and title track is just so uplifting and so lovely it's just like warm butter melting in one's mouth. MMMMMMMMMM

Lisa Mitchell Wonder was no fluke cause this is just too dreamy:

Make sure if you get the chance to see this little Australian Idol live cause she is damn fine.

Tomorrow another Aussie track as we keep it very local this week but this time it's a little more hip and a bit hop y'all

Song O the Day #44 {SARAH BLASKO - I Awake}

It couldn't be a music list without the queen of Aussie music Ms Sarah Blasko. Her latest album "I Awake" kinda went a little under the radar but the title track is something special and I think it's hard to get through hump day as we get ever so close to Christmas.

So without further ado forget crowds at the shops, forget traffic and trying to park in a horrid shopping mall, lets chill listen to some Blasko and travel to a place where people don't get their cunt on as Christmas gets ever so close:

See you for the final few song's of the day....

@ the Movies 2012 - Pitch Perfect {Preview Screening}

It number one saddens me that with piracy etc at such a high rate that this film has taken so long to get here after opening around 6 weeks earlier in the states.  So on my previous Friday night I saw an "advance" (not very advance when millions of Americans had already seen it) screening @ Sydney's movie hot spot the George Street Cinemas.

So to the movie and firstly the lead Anna Kendrick is just sublime, she was a stand out support in End of Watch and now amaze balls as the lead in this very Glee like feature "Pitch Perfect".

Rebel Wilson also shines much in this than she did in the lacklustre "Bachelorette" film recently.  Her character Fat Amy has some great open liners and some great moments.

If you like Glee you are going to adore this, if you like comedies and music you will enjoy this and if you like teen/collage drama comedies you will like this.

With a strong supporting cast, great music and a really easy to watch enjoyable film I strongly recommend this to all of y'all out there.

As school holidays approach this is perfect for the high school kids, great for uni holidays and for all us oldies a good look into the life of vocal groups.

It's not a must must see but a movie that really does aim to please.

4.25 pitch perfect stars.

Song O the Day #43 {360 - Run Alone}

Fresh from the ARIA's it's foul mouthed Melbourne rapper 360. Officially this came out on his album "Falling & Flying" last year however it was only released as a single mid 2012 and took to a life of it's own.

It has been a huge 2012 for the Melbourne MC and he really killed it with this number:

He sold out tours, headlined festivals, has simply been ultra busy. The album was re released and has sold over 70,000 copies in Australia alone.

His big moment with Gossling has also made him a crossover artist to those lovely commerical radio stations, I think he is even on the 2GB Alan Jones Breakfast shows playlist.

Anyway that's another Song O the Day so until tomoz...

Monday, December 3, 2012

Song O the Day #42 {ANGUS STONE - Bird on a Buffalo}

classic stoner chilled rock from Northern beaches boy Angus Stone. He has rested the Angus & Julia Stone killer hit making machine for them both to release their own solo records. Both have enjoyed a little success but nowhere near as much as they do as a duo. After the huge success of "Big Jet Plane" and their fab album "Down the Way" it was a good time to rest the project.

So without further ado for your chilled Monday track here is Mr Stone himself:

Song O the Day will wrap up @ 50 so not long left now, once this is all done and dusted it's almost time for the full 100 list to be published on this very BLOG. If you like music lists tune in tomorrow for the 20 biggest hits of Spring 2012 as they will all be here!
See y'all tomorrow....

Song O the Day #41 {CALVIN HARRIS - Let's Go (Feat. Ne-Yo/We'll Be Coming Back (Feat. Example)}

For your Super Sunday I thought let's go doubles again, Calvin Harris has been my 5th and maybe last album of the year nomination. These two tracks are two of the big club fillers with two big guest vocalists on board.

Let's Go shows off Ne-Yo's vocal skills and he really belts it out, nice. The song builds in all the right places, has killer Calvin production all over it and is just a great song for running, dancing or just playing cutting a rug at home.

Example teams up with Calvin for track two on Super Sunday, "We'll Be Coming Back", this song has been massive on the radio and also on the club charts and regular charts.

Calvin Harris has been all over the radio and dance floor this year, his production has been used by Cheryl Cole to Rihanna, and them teaming up on this album with Florence, Dizzee, Ellie Goulding and loads more, this album (18 Months) just so deserves an album of the year nod.

Tune in on Boxing Day to find out who gets the award, for now let's check out these tunes below:

Song O the Day #40 {FRANK OCEAN - Lost/Thinkin Bout You}

Day forty makes a very special double feature on one of my album of the year nominations Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange". I have already featured "Pyramids" but those two tracks are just gold. "Thinkin bout You" is so chilled, so smooth, it's just beautiful. "Lost" has this killer hook and such great vocals, Frank Ocean really has showed he is just all killer and 0% filler. I listened to the entire album again the other day and it just never gets old.

Frank Ocean totally deserves this double look at today's cheeky two songs O the day. Let's take a listen to the tunes below to help you chill on this Saturday:

I hope this makes you're Saturday just SUPER. Frank Ocean, oh what a dish, it's less than a month away when we discover who takes home this year's album of the year.

Happy Super Saturday!

Song O the Day #39 {SAN CISCO - Wild Things}

Oh these kids are just too cute, breaking through with awkward, they have gone on to finally release their big first album!

"Wild Things" was the lead single to grace the radio and online and people seem to be liking it.

San Cisco are super young, super cute and super fun, they sure do write a super fun little pop song and a perfect song for those long summer holiday drives to families to friends to wherever.

Have a listen below and get your Friday on.

See you on the weekend for more SUPER special songs!

So the ARIA's are on the Telly! - PART THREE!

13. Best Song:

As voted by the public and not predicted by me, Matt Corby's Brother beat a load of former reality TV stars.  Matt Corby and Lisa Mitchell are pretty much the only former Idol's who I think will ever take these style awards, even if it's voted by the public, poor Guy, poor sexy boys from Justice crew (sad face).

14.  Best Country Album:

Beccy Cole – Songs and Pictures
Catherine Britt – Always Never Enough
McAlister Kemp – Country Proud
The McClymonts – Two Worlds Collide - 5/10, good grief back to 50%, I seriously thought old Troy C-D would win this one.
Troy Cassar-Daley – Home

15.  Best Blues & Roots Album

Angus Stone – Broken Brights
Jeff Lang – Carried In Mind - 5/11 less than 50% now, I really thought with help from Jack White Lanie Lane had this one in the bag, oh dear, my predictions are woeful this year.
Lanie Lane – To The Horses
Mia Dyson – The Moment
Paul Green & The Other Colours – Behind The Stars

16. Best Female Artist:

Jessica Mauboy – Gotcha
Kimbra – Vows - 5/12, wow I really thought Missy would get another gong, so sad, NZ lady wins again!
Lanie Lane – To The Horse
Missy Higgins – The Ol' Razzle Dazzle
Washington – Insomnia

17. Best Male Artist:

360 – Falling & Flying
Angus Stone – Broken Brights
Gotye – Making Mirrors - 6/13, finally I picked another, who would have thought Keith old Urban would win and poor Guy never stood a chance, however he is the sexist nominee I think.
Guy Sebastian – Battle Scars
Keith Urban – For You
Matt Corby – Into The Flame

18. Album of the Year:

360 – Falling & Flying
Gotye – Making Mirrors - 7/14 - 50%, not bad and it was definitely The Temper Trap's and Goyte's night of night's well done and poor old 360 all those nominations and not many statues to go home with.
Missy Higgins – The Ol' Razzle Dazzle
The Jezabels – Prisoner
The Temper Trap – The Temper Trap

Well done too to Go/Channel Nine for a decent awards show on TV, good work, it does come after some terrible A Current Affairs reporting but that comes with the territory, Tracey Grimshaw really, words straight from Sonia K, it's time to go.....

So the ARIA's are on the Telly! - PART TWO!

PART TWO, here we go:

6. Best Pop Release:

Gotye – Making Mirrors - 3/5 correct guesses thus far and too bad so far for the former Idol stars, I guess the ARIA's are never going to be awarded to reality stars :(
Guy Sebastian – Battle Scars
Jessica Mauboy – Gotcha
Kimbra – Vows
San Cisco – Awkward

7. Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album:

Buried In Verona – Notorious
DZ Deathrays – Bloodstreams - 4/6 I love these guys they are so cool and deserved it!
Frenzal Rhomb – Smoko at the Pet Food Factory
House Vs Hurricane – Crooked Teeth
Sleepmakeswaves - …and so we destroyed everything

8. Best Children's Album:

Bananas In Pyjamas – Playtime
dirtgirlworld – dirtgirl rocks the planet
Hi-5 – Sing It Loud
Rhys Muldoon – I'm Not Singing
The Wiggles – Surfer Jeff - 5/7 - On a roll now, I have no idea about kids music, but everyone likes the Wiggles right?

9. Best Comedy Release:

Anthony Salame – Is This thing On?
Arj Barker – Joy Harvest
Buddy Goode – Unappropriate - 5/8, damn I went for the Beards, oh well I am no good with comedy releases, although I know good live comedy right?
Sammy J – Skinny Man, Modern World
The Beards – Having A Beard Is The New Not Having A Beard

10. Best Music Video:

I didn't pick this one back in October as it wasn't online however the divine highlight of my evening Missy Higgin's picked up this one for Everyone's Waiting. Good choice ARIA's :)

11. Best International Act:

Didn't pick this also so it was no surprise that One Erection took out the gong.

12.  Best Group:

Boy & Bear – Big Man

Cold Chisel – No Plans
Hilltop Hoods – Drinking From The Sun
The Jezabels – Prisoner
The Temper Trap – The Temper Trap - 5/9, damn you Temper Trap I really thought the Jezabels had this one also in the bag.  I am really just happy that Cold Chisel didn't get their bogan on and win this one.  Oh well even though their second album is nowhere near as good as Conditions the folks still like em.

Oh Ruby Rose put some clothes on before I head into PART THREE, god damn I have boot camp in the AM this thing needs to wind up!

So the ARIA's are on the Telly! - PART ONE

And a while back, I predicted the winners, let's see how I went:

1.  Best Independent Release:

Dappled Cities – Lake Air

Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp – Songs of the Southern Skies
San Cisco – Awkward
The Bamboos – Medicine Man
The Jezabels - Prisoner - 1/1 picked it, go the Jezabels!   2.  Best Rock Album:   Children Collide – Monument
Cold Chisel – No Plans
Oh Mercy – Deep Heat
The Jezabels – Prisoner
The Temper Trap – The Temper Trap - 1/2 I thought the Jezabels did a better job and the industry folk would roll with the indie kids from Sydney.

3.  Breakthrough Artist - Release:

360 – Falling & Flying - 2/3, too easy, 360 has a large following and I think will continue to grow in 2013.

Alpine – A Is For Alpine
Lanie Lane – To The Horses
Matt Corby – Brother
San Cisco – Awkward

4.  Best Dance Release:

Havana Brown – When The Lights Go Out
Hermitude – Hyperparadise
Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl feat. Georgi Kay – In My Mind - 2/4 50% ain't bad so early on, right?  Apparently Sneaky Sound System were also nominated which I didn't make my list I was going off, they kinda deserve an award, at least they admitted they were a couple recently.  I really wish those lovely Blue Mountains folks Hermitude won, oh well let's get the next award on Go!
Knife Party – Rage Valley

5. Best Australian Live Act:

Never predicted this one, don't know why, hmmm weird, but hey Goyte won for Making Mirrors Album Tour.  Just one note Tom Ballard looked really terrible, WTF, random WTF.

> Yothu Yindi get inducted into the hall of fame after Mauboy, Kelly, Garrett & Dan Sultan join the group at the old Entertainment Centre for a massive version of the hit tune "Treaty".

Highlight so far for part one of this BLOG entry defo Missy Higgin's "Everyone's Waiting" performance which just showed she still has it and that the single is simply pure gold!

Let's get set for PART TWO of So the ARIA's are on the Telly!

Song O the Day #38 {DCUP - I'm Corrupt}

After making it BIG a few years back with “We No Speak No Americano” with fellow mates Yolanda be Cool. DCUP has been busy since that breakthrough release, he’s just launched his label, Chookie and now launched a new single “I’m Corrupt” inspired by Kid Creole’s 1982 track (of the same name).

This is so just in time for summer and the party season and it has a totally fun clip
below for y'all to check out:

Hope you had a dance to that little ditty!

See you tomorrow for maybe the youngest people on my Song O the day list!

Song O the Day #37 {CHIDDY BANG - Mind Your Manners}

Teaming up with Sweden's one and only Icona Pop it's the almighty Chiddy Bang back with another catchy hip pop gem, it's "Mind Your Manners". Chiddy Bang has had a couple of hits since they popped up on the scene we all remember "Opposite of Adults" & "Truth" both sampling famous indie hits.

Chiddy Bang's previous single "Ray Charles" was pure gold and "Mind Your Manners" has finally seem them hit their charts.

It's hard to believe they only have one album and a couple of EP's. So let's get ready to mind our manners and tune in below:

See you tomorrow for a corrupt dance number, yes that's right!

A Short n Simple Share @ the Seymour

The Share opened late last week to great reviews and it was time for this old duck to check out what all the fuss is about.  It's dark, gritty and a realistic look at some young down n out boys in a modern world.

There is a lot of bad language in this play and a lot of adult themes but hey one of my favourite songs of 2012 features the most filthy lyrics in it (Ms A Banks "212" if you re keen) so it's nothing new for me but you the reader have been warned.

The Share is a super speedy rough look @ the youth of today and the non glamorous side of some down n out kids.

The two leads are great and the support actor is not to shabby too.  Probably the pick for me of the 2012 Reginald Season @ the Seymour and definitely not one for the faint hearted.

The Share is short n not so sweet 3 stars.

Song O the Day #36 {BEN FOLDS FIVE - Draw A Crowd}

It's been ages & ages since I hear Ben Folds Five and I must say I was always a bit of a fan of their nerdy pop music. "One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solomon Faces" was a great slice of pop, "Army" was punchy and to the point pop and the rest of it in between was just plain fun.

So it's no surprise their return to the scene has produced to catchy killer singles "Do it Anyway" and today's song O the day "Draw a Crowd".

This is fun and a good old fashioned Piano sing a long, I dare you not to crack a smile during this song:

So check out their latest album today: The Sound of the Life of the Mind and rediscover fun 90's pop music all over again.

Monday, November 26, 2012

Song O the Day #35 {BALL PARK MUSIC - Surrender}

Released in August 2012 Brisbane's Ball Park Music released yet another catchy indie sing a long in "Surrender", taken from their second full length studio album "Museum" Surrender was to be the lead single for the album and a nice taste of where the Brisbane folk are headed.

If you listen to Triple J you would be well familiar with their sound, if not I
urge you to have a listen as below:

It's another Song o the day as we head very close to the end of 2012!

Song O the Day #34 {GRINSPOON - Passerby}

Originally unearthed by Triple J, like a million years ago, Grinspoon have been a favourite on radio and local tour circuits. They have played countless Big Day Out's, Homebakes and any festival in between.

They have released a best of and some of the best sing a longs of my high school years and then early 20's. I have grown up with Grinspoon and I was so proud to hear "Passerby" and realise they still have it.

So well done to Grinspoon and today the BLOG's budget stretches to visuals and we can share the video of this rockin' tune.

Enjoy and catch you for another tune tomoz:

Song O the Day #33 {BRITISH INDIA - I Can Make You Love Me}

Another Aussie hit and British India are now making a bit of a name for themselves. A few albums in and this single is moody, it's got a great chorus and it's a real love song or maybe an anti love song.

I have enjoyed watching British India develop over the years and this is definitely there most mature effort to date. "I Can Make You Love Me" is another tune I am hoping to see in the end of year Boxing Day mega list, so stay tuned & have a listen below:

Tomorrow we head to an old school favourite of mine, they originally hail from Lismore and over the years they have had some damn big hits, think "Chemical Heart", "DCX3" & "Ready 1", check by tomorrow to find out who!

Song O the Day #32 {GYPSY & THE CAT - Sorry}

After supporting Kylie where to for Gypsy & the Cat in 2012, well a new album was a start and the lead single "Sorry" really grew on me.

"The Late Blue" has had a bit of attention and there new single "Bloom" is all
over the radio now, but today let's shine the spotlight on "Sorry". The song is
fun and has summer written all over it.

Song O the Day #31 {ELLIE GOULDING - Anything Could Happen}

Oh Coca-Cola you pick a good tune to feature on your huge budget clips and this is a great example of that. Ellie Goulding (lady friend to Skrillex) is great, her vocals, the super polished produced, the whole package is just golden.

This has been a BIG single over the last month or so and I totally feel it will appear somewhere in my end of year list, her album Halcyon could be a big deal for Ellie and she also appears on the stellar new release from Calvin Harris, so let's take a listen below:

Song O the Day #30 {THE TEMPER TRAP - Trembling Hands}

Were staying in Melbourne today for not an Aussie Hip Hop song, not an emerging artist, it's the global success story of the Temper Trap. Their second album was not meet with as much excitement as their debut "Conditions" however this track has been a big smash for them, proving commercial stations are interested and bringing you a big stadium rock tune.

The single has sold gold in Australia (sales in excess of 35,000) and it continues to be a radio favourite.

The Temper Trap are today's BIG song of the day as the countdown nears for the BIG 100 list on Boxing Day!

Album of the Year Nomination #5 - CALVIN HARRIS - 18 Months

It's no surprise that it's been a BIG year for dance music, it's been a big year
for collaborations and when the two meet you get David Guetta's Nothing but the Beat 2.0. Jokes!

The fifth and possible final album of the year nomination for 2012 goes to Scottish super producer Calvin Harris. He has had a dream run in 2012 and late 2011. His album when I listened to it in full kinda sounded like a best of Calvin Harris of the last few years. It started with "Bounce" mid last year and it not only acted as a solid first single but a kick start to the amazing revamp of Kelis.

Then he hammered it home with "Feels so Close", a tune so awesome that it stuck around for months, both songs made my amazing end of year 101 last year @ 4 & 9. The third single proved that Ne-Yo can sing and sing the hell out of "Let's Go", it was a big house number with a crazy big chorus that brings the roof down. Example got in on the act for single number four and then the dream team made single number five a number one smash in 2012 with Florence Welch smashing "Sweet Nothing" out of the ball park.

Then after five monster smashes the album dropped and with this Ellie Goulding (BF to Skrillex) track "Need Your Love" surfaced (also featured on her disc), this and the Tinie Tempah track attracted chart attention too.
Ayah Marar, Dizzee Rascal, Nicky Romero & the Rihanna featured "We Found Love" all also feature on this awesome party mix CD.

There is no filler it is all serious dance floor filler. This is by far Calvin Harris's best album to date. This will really put him on the map and maybe knock David Guetta off the king of collab throne for a while.

Calvin Harris joins Frank Ocean, Missy Higgins, the Hilltop Hoods & The xx in the race for my album of the year. Who will win, find out on Boxing Day AM.

Peace Out!

Song O the Day #29 {ALLDAY x C1 - So Good}

Hailing from Melbourne, influenced by Frank Ocean (melts), TLC (Oh Lisa Left Eye) & Silverchair, yes diverse influences but one nice fresh sunny sound.  It's Allday teaming up with production star C1 for "So Good" and let's just say this song is totally so good!

Have a listen below and give Melbourne some Aussie Hip Hop Love:

Happy tight arse Tuesday BITCHES!

@ the Movies 2012 - Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

Oh dear it's finally come to a close and in a way it all couldn't end quick enough.  The first movie was an abortion gone haywire, the second was a vast improvement, the third was a none event and the last movie spilt in two was almost as much of a cash grab as Taken 2.  So the whores of Hollywood combined to make this conclusion to one of the worst/best saga's of recent times.

The main thing to have watched during the length of this overly long saga was Jacob, the dreamy (in the later films) Taylor Lautner.  So let's look at a photo essay of his Twilight days:

1.  Twilight, long haired thug:

2. New Moon, Taylor got naked (well PG13 naked):

3. Eclipse, naked (PG13) in the cold, shrinkage much?

4. The slightly lame drawn out Breaking Dawn Part One:

5. In the final this shirtless scene made the entire cinema crack up, not sure if it was meant to get that reaction:

There we have it, a few girls would have just lost their shit, a few boys may have creamed their jeans and now for the rest of the cast:

Kristen Stewart - Still a sour young C*^T

Robert Pattinson - Still pale and fucking ugly as, next to Taylor he looks like a corpse that has been six feet under for years then chucked in a microwave had piles of foundation launched onto him and then put in front of a camera.  The light from the camera would be the most sun he has seen in 15 years.

Dakota Fanning - Why did you sign on for these films, your better than this?

Anyway it's done dusted and 4 & 1/2 films later the vampires are well rested and the whole story wraps up Hollywood style.  This is exactly why "End of Watch" was such a refreshing film, this movie was just average and I have decided 2013 I am the enemy of average and I'm gonna call average out wherever I can.

So that said, Twilight the finale rates a fair 2 stars, it does suck but it has it's moments (mainly when Taylor gets his guns out), it's the end of an era.

Bye Twilight, it's been real, NOT!

PS - Thank god for True Blood

Song O the Day #28 {OF MONSTERS & MEN - Little Talks}

Hailing from Iceland it's some Mumford & Sons inspired folk rock. Who ever thought this genre would have some chart toping numbers in the 2010's.

This song is a little Mumford a little Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's, it's filled with the big sing a longs and some damn good times.

Take a listen below and see if this band is going to be top of the pops on the Boxing Day 100 song extravaganza!

Yes it's not long now till I list the full 100 songs and reveal the album of the year, maybe during this week another nomination will be revealed stay tuned....
