September TV Finales - The Republic of Sarah - Season One/Series Finale

The Republic of Sarah is the most original series on The CW in years! Hence, it's been cancelled after one lonely season. Sadly, the series also has a rather low Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 43%. I personally however liked the idea for the series, whilst also liking the 13 episodes that have now concluded in Australia on Stan.

Starring Stella Baker as Sarah, alongside Aussie Luke Mitchell, Megan Follows, Izabella Alvarez, Ian Duff, Hope Lauren, Nia Holloway, Landry Bender and Forrest Goodluck.

Like Australia, mining remains a hot topic in the USA. The show commences with the following plot line. A massive vein of coltan (an incredibly valuable mineral) is discovered under the town Greylock, New Hampshire, a mining company prepares to extract the mineral which would effectively remove the town from existence.

Sarah Cooper (AKA The Republic of Sarah) a rebellious high school teacher residing in Greylock, organizes and leads opposition. However, an unexpected result occurs when the town becomes its own nation, separate from the US. Therefore, Sarah (along with key members of the town) must grapple with developing their own country. Complicating matters further is Sarah's brother (Luke Mitchell) working at the mining company. Even more complicated is some of the drama and events that unfold throughout the 13-episode run.

When I say original at The CW, I mean this is not a high school drama (yes Sarah started out teaching at the high school before the drama starts) or a DC comic book series. The CW has really been lacking a grounded series without all the conflict of a superhero series or even on a smaller scale Kung Fu.

The show probably also struggled being released over the US summer (which was mostly COVID restriction free) so this cannot have helped. With very few big names in the series I don't think the show attracted many viewers based on the cast list.

The only problem with this series was the story would get stale real quick if it continued. Yes, they could cover all items about the constitution could be covered but that would get dull real fast. Unless you loved US politics.

Could have been a super tight 8-episode miniseries, so I can't really say I am surprised this has been canned. Either way if you don't want to watch the Block or the footy finals, The Republic of Sarah streams now on Stan.
