What's On @ the Movies 2013 - Spring Breakers
- Actual release date Sep 2012 in Venice.
Oh James Franco is there anything you can't do and can you not turn Disney and Pop Princesses into complete sluts, see below and then it's Sunday morning review time:
Now if you play the trailer and then check through the YouTube comments, oh boy. At first I was like hey it's easy to criticise this but then for me it was easy to see messages in this film about drug use and the all American Dream.
You can watch this movie and see what is obvious to the viewer but then if you think about the ways and wants of these four girls, it makes me sad for today's consumer driven society. We want this, we want that, we will do almost anything to consume more and more bullshit. Reality TV exploits this episode after episode with hidden commercials within the program (not juts the lengthy ad breaks) with their so called "product placement". Now this isn't another one of my bashes on the Block or The Voice but a look a modern society and the coming of age of Spring Break in the US.
James Franco's Alien character is so brilliant and Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez throw it all on the line in this indie American hit. It has made five times it's budget and maybe that's due to the large amount of nudity but these three and supporting smaller known actresses are great. It's like a compressed Underbelly season but done so well.
I think life lessons (to the music of Skrillex) could be beneficial to today's drug obsessed and party crazed youth. This country's war on drugs is failing, the US has no chance with Mexico on it's door stop and Europe with it's endless borders, forget it. If a young kid thinking they can make some easy cash in this trade I recommend seeing this film to scare the shit out of them.
Back to the movie and not my moral rant, I loved it, James Franco nailed the creepy weird as fuck drug dealer (unfortunately I have meet a few characters equally as shady and fucked up as him) Gomez & Hudgens played the American sweethearts who would be so naive to get involved in the business they ended up in.
The imagery was great, the use of Britney's "Everytime" was priceless and I left the cinema thinking, how many naive young girls and boys would lose there existence to this lifestyle?
Movies like this (telling the truth) are rare as major Hollywood studios prefer to smash out comic book movies, Part 3's of really tired series and movies that have cash cow written all over them.
I am happy I saw this on the big screen and give it 3.75 stars for freaking me out.
