Bates Motel - Norman's Past is almost dull
A remake and a prequel all in one (like Gotham) to Psycho was always going to be interesting. As well making the show in the current time was always going to be a bit of a stretch with the film set years in the past.
Bates Motel has been a slow burn on the A&E network, never rating hugely, but always earning critical acclaim along the way and a huge Facebook following (1.4 million likes).
I have in the past enjoyed this series however the Norma/Norman mother/son relationship is just getting a bit random. Yes Norman has a mommy complex, yes Norma slightly leads her son on and treats him like a baby.
It's hard networks in the US keep shows on the books for last past their use by date nowadays (Glee, The Following, Revenge for example) and sometimes an idea just stretches on and on... A remake, a comic book conversation, a spin off all (usually) have a limited lifecycle. Dramas that are based on crimes, in hospitals, apartment blocks (oh Melrose) etc all have long lives due to multiple characters, stories to run. Shows like Weeds based on a weed dealing soccer mum or Nurse Jackie a drug taking Nurse, all have limited life cycles with Jackie's sober seasons, mixed with high seasons and Weeds and the same ground hashed out (lol) over and over, just becomes dull viewing.
Will I be watching Bates Motel if it gets a fourth series (and this is highly likely due to online talk that a fourth and fifth season have been planned), the simple answer is yes. I need to see the end game. Like Revenge I have held on to the very bitter end. And bitter it is. Now Victoria is back alive and Courtney Love has reentered, it has gone mental.
Unfortunately Revenge will be remembered for it's mad decline and it's ratings disaster and major fall from grace. How quickly a show can fall from grace. The Following was huge season one, and now in season three it's a ratings disaster.
Bates Motel Season Three, it's almost finale time but will a Fourth Series be worth watching? Time will surely tell.
