TGI Friday's NU Music

Here are some CD's I reviewed whist/during/pre/post holidays and it's time to share them with you, tomorrow just a sneak peak I got totally brain hacked last night so I will let you know all about my new Irish friend Mr Keith Barry.

First up, let's get POP!

The Wanted

Self Titled   I was recently in the UK and these boys are big and this is kinda the boys "Best Of" after only two albums as this features material from their two albums "The Wanted" and "Battleground", kinda a good idea and a good way to make a way into international markets. The first two songs make me wanna love boy bands again (well actually I never did get the Backstreet Boys and NKOTB thing, was always more of a Peter Andre kinda guy) "Glad You Come" is a massive pop tune produced by Steve Mac who has produced so many over the years including Australian own Sophie Monk! "Chasing the Sun" is fun and makes me yearn for summer so hard after recently enjoying a bit of a Euro summer myself.

The high energy continues with "All Time Low" and you think I wish more bands would combine the best bits of two albums, saves hitting fast forward through all the fillers. The next tune "Satellite" builds nicely to yet another high exercise gym friendly number that cranks in around 3 minutes, the whole album hits you in just under 35 minutes.

"Lightning" is totally camp including the line "I know it's a little bit frightening we might as well be playing with lightning" love it LOL, also produced by Steve Mac whose production is featured heavily on this poptastic record.

"Heart Vacancy" is a bit of a lighters up in the air anthem, the tempo builds again on "Gold Forever" another perfect pop tune, "Lose My Mind" if you listen real close at the start totally steals a little bit of "Use Somebody" from the Kings of Leon and this comes back in and out of the tune, clever thinking boys.

"Warzone" is another slower jam that nearly winds up the ten track album, "Rocket" finishes off the release and shows sometimes pop albums really can work. This 90% killer "pop" succeeds with solid production and few "filler" songs. Well done to the Wanted.

The Wanted hit Australia next week for their promo tour. Buy their album The Wanted online now at Getmusic.

No to some of the ladies from the Voice:

Rachael Leahcar

Shooting Star   Oh boy, when listening to Rachael Leahcar's album you really wonder how does such a young girl like such daggy old songs. Unlike De Bono who choose fun/current tunes for her debut Leahcar has really chosen some songs that would help almost any sleep deprived individual into a complete coma. The opening four songs proved an old point of mine "I love local music a lot but this isn't local music this is local anaesthetic.

She does have a lovely voice though and you may dig this kinda thing, but I found the songs particularly the covers just horrible. You really just want to do an extreme make over for Rachael and tell her honey it's okay to sing songs for your age, Adele sings songs that appeal to everyone from 8 to 80 but they are age appropriate not has been songs like "Over the Rainbow" and "Hands".

It surprised me to read this album debuted at number 5 however the surprise was quickly taken back by reading the album has slumped back to number 108 on the iTunes chart. Unfortunately for many TV talent show contestants this is the grime reality of your literal five minutes of fame.

Let's just hope Rachael discovers a way to rediscover herself for disc number two.

Sarah De Bono

No Shame

To say when I looked over the ten tracks covered on this reality stars album I was really excited was an understatement, some of my favourite songs covered by this runner up from series one of the Voice. "Warwick Avenue" and "Heavy Cross" awesome tunes by Duffy and Gossip respectively but how did De Bono go with them? Well I must admit I was never a huge fan of this series, I found the judges a little too kind, the song choices a little off and everyone who knows me knows that Lisa Mitchell is definitely the best thing to come from reality TV or maybe Matt Corby if I need to choose one of each sex.

So the Gossip cover was a little flat, if you have seen Gossip live, Beth Ditto is one BIG personality and the voice matches, and De Bonos voice just didn't match it. The Duffy cover, it's better than the Gossip cover but only marginally. There are two originals on the disc the single and title tune "No Shame" & "Beautiful" which I originally thought she was taking on the big number from Xtina. The originals are okay and have slightly impacted the national singles charts but nowhere near as much success as the Winner.

The Usher cover also a favourite tune of mine (yes guilty pleasure and who can't imagine Usher singing this to you and you totally melting for that hot piece of man action) was really a low point of this album, I thought it was Rebecca Black making a guest appearance, scary.

I think overall De Bono has a great look and with the right marketing and time she could be a star, but right now this felt half baked and a little rushed. Looking forward to seeing what her second release is like and possibly her live experience.   Buy Sarah De Bono’s album online
