The Principle.

So I was extremely excited about the Alex Dimitriades mini series which is currently airing on SBS Wednesday/Thursday nights. Episodes One & Two aired last week and I smashed them both on a Lazy Sunday and was hooked immediately. The show is extremely relevant right now and was a realistic look at some of the issues faced by young males in their final years of high school now.

I am extremely looking forward to the final two parts Episode Three & Four this Wednesday + Thursday and really want to congratulate SBS for putting on this brilliant and gritty series. Unfortunately the commercial networks are happier renewing a dead and buried Offspring or creating new series for old favourites like Rebecca Gibney or Erik Thomson.

I always like the fact that Channel Seven just sees a cash cow like Gibney or Thomson and goes "well it worked on Packed to the Rafters so let's cast them in X". The producers of the Principle have done the opposite and seen a gap in the market for a gritty high school drama and delivered.

Australians can tell great stories however so often it's easier to make a copy cat or stay with something that is a proven formula and want challenge viewers. HBO & Showtime in America have shown us the Golden Age of TV with programs like Six Feet Under, Dexter & Game of Thrones and I believe joining the Golden Age of TV is The Principle. I look forward to seeing Alex Dimitriades winning the industry voted awards at the next Logies. Unfortunately I cannot see him taking out the publicly voted awards, however that is not everything.

Well done SBS this is a truly brilliant, fresh and remarkable series, it's a story for right here, right now in Australia.
