NU MUSIC - We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heart | Jonathan Boulet Review

I love an album with a massive overlong title "We Keep the Beat Found the Sound see the Need Start the Heart", is the title to the second album by Jonathan Boutlet, it's not as long as a Fiona Apple album but it's getting there. The first tune the familiar "You're an Animal" builds for the first 50 seconds and then launches into this big sound, track two (also a familiar tune if you listen to Triple J and recently heard this album as a feature release) This Song Is Called Raggard, is a really fun bouncy tune that will have you smiling and thinking wow two great tunes back to back, this album is a bit of a winner.

Track three "FM AM CB TV" continues it's assault and produces some really sweet colourful sounds, "Hallowed Hag" & "Dread Is This Place" keeps the pace of this album feeling like a warm sunny Autumn day.

By the mid point of this album Boutlet jumps into "Mangle Trang" and the same tempo continues, with rich uses of different layers of instruments and big vocals. Track 8 is the final big single already released which is a (close to) two minute stomp, "Trounce". It is slightly different sounding tune from the previous ones on the album, it's fast and packs a big punch. "Black Smokehat" is definitely a darker track with an almost scary vibe to it, the warmth of the first half of the album has now turned into a cold Autumn night. The next tune my favourite titled track on the album "Keep Away You Feral Son Of A Bitch", brings back the joy and the vast layers of sound back leading into the tail end of what started out a solid release and really holds you the listener right through to the end.

I have to say my favourite tracks are the opening two cuts and "Trounce", there is something about a short sharp tune. Boutlet's second release is a ray of sunshine and is anything but a difficult second record, my only criticism would be the last two tunes in comparison to the remainder of the disc are a little lengthy and could have possibly been "bonus tracks" (you know the ones only the die hard fans listen to), I wish him all the best in what could be a very bright future.

We Keep the Beat, Found the Sound, See the Need, Start the Heart is available now from the Jonathan Boulet Store and Getmusic.
